Ultimate Fred Move (or only in Berkeley)

So I'm driving behind a Mazda Miata, top up with a bike on the bike. The bike was anti-OCP with dork disc, reflectors, mirrors, etc. I just happened to notice it because I was behind the car for a couple of blocks. Then I noticed something else looked... odd.

As I pulled up next to the little red Miata at a light I looked over and yep - he really was wearing his helmet in the car. With requisite third eye attached. And looking none too comfortable.

Bad move or hot trend? Discuss.

I only take my helmet off when I sleep.

It's spelled Berkeley. And before you lay too much NY attitude on me, I also lived in TriBeCa and Union Square....

Thanks for the spelling tip, and if you lived in TriBeCa and Union Square, a guy in a car with a bicycle helmet on should not at all seem strange to you. Still not sure why you (or anyone else would want to live in Berkeley, I'm also not sure why as a cyclist anyone would want to live in NY, but that's another story.).

Many years ago, the young jockey Steve Cauthen decided to wear his riding helmet while driving to training. He had never ridden it while driving before. Turns out he was in a pretty bad accident and the helmet may have saved his life! Maybe Miata guy had a vision!!

Something you don't want your kids to see.

Its how little bikes are made.

barba 04-14-08 11:22 AM

Wearing a helmet in the car would probably help in a crash, actually.

Yes, from a pure risk perspective it probably makes more sense to wear a helmet while in a car than on a bike. Or skiing.

Asian Sensation 04-14-08 06:19 PM

i wear my time trial helmet backwards while driving...

Um, dynamic urban environment, beautiful CA coast, with amazing cycling (think climbing) out my front door??? Somebody sounds jealous.....

p.s. it's spelled Berserkeley

If the Miata didn't have a roll bar, I'd say it was a good move. The mirror also helps to see in the "blind spot" of the vehicle not to mention the extra cooling of the air vents directing air to the head. Good job methinks. New trend definately.

maybe he wuz running late for the group ride and wanted to jump out of his car, detach the bicycle from the rack, and hop on the saddle to pedal away to join the group?
if he was wearing his helmet then i'll bet he was also wearing his cycling shoes and ready-to-ride immediately.

I freaking love Berkeley and can't wait to get back there. What do people have against that town except the handful of loudmouths that always make the news? As powpow said, incredible riding right out your front door.

RJBTrek 04-14-08 08:26 PM

Did he put the helmet on before or after he saw you in the rear-view mirror?

TONYKART125 04-14-08 08:27 PM

hot trend*

Ride a few minutes east from almost anywhere in Berkeley and it'll probably all make sense.

So, did you pass the Miata or were you "dropped" by a FRED? C'mon, you can tell us.
