Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

mid-range Look-style pedals

After riding SPDs for over a decade I finally bought my first pair of actual road shoes (Adidas Girano). Not the best shoes I know but they fit well, are not butt ugly, and the price was right.

I have some Nashbar Look-style pedals that have been kicking around for a while that came with a bike I bought. I have a new build that I'm hoping to (finally) finish this weekend at which point my faithful 90's Davidson will become my backup road bike. I'm thinking of throwing the Nashbar pedals on that and getting something a little nicer for the new ride so I can use the same shoes for both.

Any suggestions? My budget would probably top out at $100. I'm not opposed to taking a left turn and trying something else entirely but it would be good to be able to used the pedals I already have.

You're going to need new cleats for whatever pedal you get. Unless you just stay with the nashbar ones. Just b/c they're look style doesn't mean they have the same cleat. Plus old cleats should be replaced anyway unless they're speedplays, but I don't care about speedplays, so I won't talk about them anymore.

2x the cost of the 105 pedal for something that says ultegra instead of 105 on the pedal body. Good choice otherwise though.

And this is a non-issue, since pedals usually come with cleats.

Yeah, if you want to be able to use the same shoes for both bikes you are going to have to have the same brand of pedals on each bike as well. Unless you want to keep switching cleats every time you switch bikes. This is of course cheaper than buying two pairs of shoes...

Yes, unfortunately Look discontinued the pedal I was using, model P357 I think, with Delta cleats. Their new line, Keo, uses a different cleat. So I went with the Ultegras on my new bike. Turns out I like the Look better. Ultegras have more/better float, but the Look was so much easier to get in/out of.

I would have tried the Look Keos next, but my son had the Ultegras and I thought the compatibility might be useful someday.

Btw, I have to use two pairs of road shoes for the two different systems.

Hmm...

Someone on Craigslist is selling 2 pair of DA SPD-SL for $50. I know the system is dead but I think cleats are still available. I've had good luck with Shimano SPDs.

Any thoughts?

I think you're confused. SPD-R is "dead" as you call it, but SPD-SL is the system that the 105 through Dura Ace pedals currently use.

Correct. SPD-R is what I meant. No more late night posting for me. SPD-R is no longer in production, right?
