Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who cares, just pick one for the day and ride. Rust isn't a problem for a properly maintained steel frame. If you are concerned about anything, it should be about keeping one of your drivetrains clean. The rain bike will have a nasty chain. Other than that, just HTFU and ride.

They're both Campy. I am considering another build sometime, I have a Centaur group sitting around. All I really need is a cheap aluminum frame that can do double duty for wet weather and hairy crits. But knowing me I'll get carried away with the build and get too attached again to want to get it wet.

Maybe you should get a frame that is already beaten up. That way you won't be concerned about it getting beaten up.

+1

Add a cyclocross with fenders since you already have the ssfg w/fenders.
Something that looks better with dirt and mud?

Both. These are bicycles, appliances for traveling and exercise not something to sit inside and drool over or worry about having a spit shine. Just get a can of oil for the drivetrain and occasionally wipe everything down and it'll be fine. Bicycle components are hardly investments worth keeping pristine (though I am sure someone has an anecdote out there about how this and such bicycle is worth big $$$$ now, beating the S&P average return over the past 25 years...)

I wouldn't ride either of those in the rain, especially the carbon bike with Record. Just buy an already built-up cheap-ish aluminum bike with 105/Mirage level components. It sounds like another attempt to build a winter bike will only end in another uber-bike.

I've got an old 90's trek aluminum 7 speed with dt shifters that I ride in the rain. Aluminum won't rust, at least other than lightly on the surface, and 7 speed parts are fairly cheap. Such bikes can be had for less than $200.

Sorry, steaktaco, you played yourself by having two nice bikes, regardless of frame composition. You now must get a new bike. Try a 29'er with some mudguards or fenders and make sure it's as ugly as sin.

FWIW, my (N + 1) = 5 bikes. I think I can finally stop buying them now.

Nice looking bikes!

If I was you, I would get a beater to ride in the rain.

Thanks all. I do plan on another build sometime, all I really need is a frame. Perhaps the cheapest alloy I can find from bikeisland or chuck's...

But for today, I have these two road bikes to choose from and it's mighty wet out. I think I'll take the Axman.

Doesn't carbon fiber float? If so then the carbon one, could be used as a floatation device in the event of flooding in a bad rainstorm.
