So I get this physical at work and after the nurse prac. takes my vitals he asks "are you a runner" - no, I'm a cyclist. So, with a BP of 110/80 and a HR 60 at age 50 I'm some kind of oddity. Those numbers seem very normal to me. What the hell kinda' shape is the population in anyway?

My RHR is 45 @ age 50, so that probably makes me a World Class Athlete.
Actually 60 for a RHR is that of a jogger or somebody in decent shape, most RHR #'s tend to be 65-80 or so.
I'm pack fodder in the local amateur 35+ races. My guess is that a real world class athlete (like Ned Overend) our age would have a RHR <40. And your own RHR is probably 55 or so if it's 60 in the doctor's office in the middle of the day (take it when you wake up in the AM lying in bed to get the actual number).

I did a pretty fast paced 50 miler on Sunday and I take a couple days to fully recover. I get as low as 52 in the morning and was at 46 a few years ago but I can't seem to get it that low anymore.

LOL, I'm 27 yo with a 70HR resting, I bike lots, run 30-40 miles/wk, swim 5k or more/wk, and do judo. It's funny how the doctors always tell me I'm fit, I want a 40BPM HR!

Closing in on 49 and my RHR is in the mid-50's. BP normally 110/70, although it's been lower than that at times. If I rise up too quickly, I'll often get light-headed.

your RHR is worth little more thna bragging rights. It has a big genetic componet, and comparing to others is irrelevant.
The only value of tracking RHR is to see changes over time, which are some indication of progress, and can also signal overtraining.
But comparing RHR to another is the equivalent of saying my dad can beat up your dad.

Go to your local wal-mart (or equivalent) and look around. Then you might understand why someone of your age and good health is becoming a rarity. America needs to HTFU.

What? Arteries don't count? I don't consider myself an athlete by any stretch but over the past year I've lowered my RHR from the high 70's/low 80's to 41 and with any luck I'll be getting off my cholesterol meds this week after 6 years on them. Cycling has played a big part in that.

As someone said earlier, RHR doesn't mean much - a guy who coached me for rowing had a RHR of 40 something and he hasn't trained for years... It's recovery time that really indicates fitness.

Is it just me or do you want to bounce something off of those arms to see if it sticks or bounces.
Anyway...I ususally get wierd looks. I'm not in super shape, but my BP and RHR are usually very, very low. Thanks mom and dad. At least you gave me something good genetically.

Last time I donated blood (at the blood bank, not the crit), RHR was 46. They almost didn't take the blood. So that's the downside. And maybe the upside, depending on who's weilding the needle.
Pretty sure low RHR is genetic, since I'm not exactly an athletic specimen.

The parents of those two should be jailed. How about you take your kids for a walk instead of driving them to Mcd's?

That's what would happen if you proposed the idea of them going on a walk.

My RHR is around 50 and blood pressure is perfect. Just signed up for Life Insurance and had to go through all sorts of vital tests. I qualified for the "Super Preferred" rate which must mean the insurance company thinks I am in shape. That is saying something The nurse asked if I was a weight lifter........ Nope, I just ride and swim thank you very much

And good parents deal with that and make them walk anyway, so you're just helping to make my point. I hate to quote Keanu Reeves but here goes "They make you get a license to drive a car, but they'll let any *****hole be a father".

I think a lot of the over-eating is due to ignorance of the caloric content of food and the caloric needs of the human body. People get fat and "it's my thyroid" or "it's my motabolism", it's never "I don't get off my a55" or "I eat way too f@*!ng much". Video games, TVs, riding lawnmowers, sedentary jobs all add to the increasing obesity epidemic. But, you know what? Most people don't care. How many teenage girls do you see with their fat midriff hanging out? Lots...

teenagers are in a midst of a growth spurt, so having slightly excessive intake instead of less is ok.

Yep, our kids have been riding their bikes to school since preschool (off training wheels on 3rd b-day). They're all healthy, lean, and fast as hell on foot (soccer, running, etc.).
