Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Air tool oil. Cheap, nice applicator, lasts a week or more before needing another application. I've never had chains last this long (I ride in rain).

ok, thought I would give an update on the ProLink lube.

It has been about 400 miles now and the lube is good, but a little "smelly" compared to my CLP. I have relubed every 100 miles just to "break in" the chain and gears and cleaned religiously. The lube is good and keeping the chain and gears clean and quiet and other then the strong smell I am happy with it.

When I get back to the dusty desert of Arizona i will make sure and post and update on how it handles compared to the CLP I use on my mt. bike.

Prolink, then someone turned me on to Purple Extreme. Both kick ass, but Purple has the edge

Prolink for the chain...it's a cleaner too, which saves a step. Pedro's Road Rage for the derailers, brake pivots, and single speed freewheel. Phil Wood's waterproof grease for pretty much everything else, including cables.

It's less important what you use (provided you aren't lubing with a solvent like WD40) than that you use SOMETHING. Neglect is the biggest cause of premature chain/chainring/cog death.

I've tried most on the market at one time or other, I'm currently using Pedro's dry lube on the road, Boeshield T-9 off road.

Pedro's and Boeshield seem to be just about identical in dry conditions, same smell, lube quality, etc.. Boeshield is appears a bit better in wet conditions, and it cleans the chain better so I'm going to switch to Boeshield T-9 for an all condition lube, plus it's a bit cheaper.

What, exactly, is the difference between prolink and wd-40? I used prolink once; it flushed out the chain and then just seemed to evaporate. I couldn't help but wonder: was it lubricating my chain?

well, it is a darn good cleaner. It stripped off the preservative from the factory and "cleaned" everything. It did leave a film that seems to protect ok. I haven't lubed the pivot points on the brakes or anything else, just the chain and components.

Kind of like the difference between using KY or water/spit.
