Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Punk rock was really big among bike racers (at least the juniors and youngish seniors) in the mid to late 80's. At the least punk rock was way more popular among bike racers than it was in the general population. I think botto could back up this claim.

And yes, punks and hipsters are two very different sub-cultures.

As far as I can tell, they just keep driving anyway until they kill someone and get locked up.

We're talking about the old guys with the scraggly beards, wearing worn out pink&purple polyester wind breakers, riding girls huffy mountain bikes and holding a six-pack of beer....right?

I have witnessed a shirtless guy riding what had to be his kid's bike home - steering with one hand and dangling a full case of beer in the other down around the crank.

I was pretty impressed with his ability to maintain an upright, equilibrium despite what had to be one heck of a weight imbalance. He should get his kid some panniers for xmas.

It can be an awful existance when you are an alcoholic. They have my sympathy.

IMHO I dont think we should be making wise-cracks about them either

I had a friend who was a competitive runner (he did like 8 Boston Marathons), a bicyclist and a scholar. He eventually did himself in by drinking automotive windshield washing fluid. Not a good way to go and a sad day for eveyone who knew him.

That's strange. We're also the fittest city in America:

There are tons here though. Bikes are their only means of transportation. You can usually hear them squeaking before you can see them.

It is a weird irony, for sure. Just last night I enjoyed three fine tobacco products on my night shift before coming home. I know it's bad for me and it hurts my riding, yet I still do it. Less and less. Moonlighting at a sports bar two nights a week, I see my share of DUI offenders.

... In college, before I was a cyclist, I got a PI while I was riding back from a party on a bike. Kinda bull****, if you ask me. At least I wasn't driving.

Then again, the penalty for public intoxication isn't exactly stiff.. more like a speeding ticket with a night in jail thrown in.
