Question about choice of grouppos

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Question about choice of grouppos

I was in my LBS and talked with one of the salepersons about which components to put on my new bike. The bike is a Colnago Extreme Power as a gift from my GF and parents and I can choose pretty much which components I want.

I pretty much know which wheelset, handlebar, stem, saddle and seat post to put on, but I'm not sure about the grouppo.

I've been thinking about Dura Ace as I'm used to Shimano from my Cannondale with 105 grouppo, but I was thinking about SRAM Red. The salesperson said he could build the bike with SRAM Red or Campagnolo Record at the same price, but the build with Dura Ace would be a bit cheaper, but not by much.

Therefore, what are the main differences between DA and SRAM Red ? I was told the SRAM Red shifted differently and which grouppo would you choose between DA, Red and Record (if you disregard that Colnago and Campagnolo both are Italian).

Regards,
Jakob

Why would you consider anything other than Campy Record for your Colnago?

I would try out all three and choose the one that I liked best and pay no attention to what anyone on the internet suggests..... That being said, I would suggest that you go with Record.

I have SRAM Red and I like the double tap system. But given the frame you have, Campy is the only way to go.

Kittens will die if you put shimano on that bike.

+1 for Campy Record..... But try out everything if you're gonna put that much cash into it. That way you'll have no regrets.

I could care less about the whole Campy thing. I say go with whatever you like. I'd probably put Red or Campy on just because the hoods are a bit more comfortable for smaller hands.

She's cheating on you.

That being said, Conalgo and campy is like Peanut butter and jelly, it just goes together.

Why would you consider Colnago is the better question.

Which wheelset have you decided upon? I know there are wheels out there that just don't have Campy-compatible options. That could make your decision real simple. I'm not familair with SRAM componentry, but I'm guessing they probably just used the Shimano cassette spline pattern.

Personally, I'm very happy with my SRAM red, but you really need to try out the various options to see what you like best. I don't see any reason why you wouldn't also at least try out the campy stuff. Tho being able to swap wheels with your other bike in a pinch could be enough to make it worth picking SRAM or Shimano.

Thanks for all the answers. I can see most people recommend Record. I've never tried Record or Red or DA for that matter, but I'm used to Shimano. However, I'm probably more hooked on DA or Red, dunno why, as I've never tried Record.

I'm pretty much determined on getting a set of Mavic R-Sys wheels.

+ whatever on Record. You honestly don't have a choice and will be beaten senseless and be forever ostracized from the cycling community for putting anything else on it.

+ whatever on marrying the gf... or at least lock her up somewhere where we can't find her.

+ whatever on kittens dying. That just wouldn't be cool

+ whatever on different wheels than the R-sys. Please, for the love of all that is holy, rethink this decision.

Mr. Campagnolo will insist you learn the Italian (and only) spelling of GRUPPO.

I'm not even a big fan of Campy, but with the Colnago, you have to do Record.

Yup... Campy. And while you're at it, go with Campy wheels too.
