Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin 305 for $164

For anyone who would like a Garmin 305, REI is having an anniversary sale tomorrow (May 2nd).

Garmin 305's will supposedly be going for $164.xx. You may want to pick one up today and price match tomorrow to make sure that you beat the rush.

Also, there is an online coupon code ANNV20 for 20% off (REI members only).

Thats a crazy deal. With the 705 being so broken, anyone looking at a cycling GPS computer would be insane to pass that deal up.

Argh! I just bought a refurb one on Ebay for $208 including shipping this morning, and I thought I got a good deal. Oh well.

Just get an etrex Legend Cx + Polar HR monitor and you'll not only spend about the same but you'll get a color screen, a memory card slot and turn-by-turn directions with alert.

There site now shows it to be $359.00 will it be cheaper tomorow? Also will the coupon code GHVKM2 work (it is 15% off for nonmembers). Are these old stock 305's or the newest ones?

I see no indication that the 305 is going to be on sale. I'll have to go home and check my flyer but the online preview doesn't show it. It would be great if this is true.

You don't have to use motionbased, you can just download everything to your computer. That said, motionbased is free, althought there is a pay option that gives some additional benefits. And actually, it is being replaced with a new service, Garmin Connect and it is supposed to transition over mid-May.

hmm, I haven't heard anything mixed about the software that comes with it. It pretty much sucks. Mac users should use Ascent and Windows user should use SportTracks. SportTracks is free, don't know about Ascent.

Agreed - even on REI's "preview the sale" section, under Garmin, it shows other systems available - certainly no Edge 305.

In my flyer it is the Forerunner 205/305 for $125/$165. The eTrex is on sale for $260. Will the eTrex stand up to sweat?

It may be the Forerunner. The link on the source website is vague whether it is the forerunner or edge (I don't have the flyer).

I tried mounting my blue eTrex on my dirt bike and it never stayed powered up due to engine vibration. The AA battery terminals couldn't maintain contact under vibration. Rechargeable, internal battery is the way to go. Plus, eTrex are big as all get out. Keep an eye out for a 305 deal. I got mine in December for $200 and it's changed my life. There are bound to be some deals coming even though I LOL'd at Nashbar's sale $349. I even use the Garmin software!

Oh yeah, nice for the trainer, too. It's the only rear-mount with cadence AND heartrate built in.

Trust me.. youre not missing a thing. Motionbased is 10 times better than Connect.

There are going to be a LOT of disappointed people when they are forced to use Connect.

+a zillion. I still use MB with my 705. They better implement the rest of the MB features before they cut it off...
