Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sell your bike and go back to the couch immediately!

I doubt I'm old enough to be your grandmother. . . but if I'd passed you, I would've been nice and said hello as I breezed on by

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I have only been passed three times this year on solo rides. However, not many people ride around here, and I have only encountered three other riders on solo rides... I don't mind - who cares.

Ride more, HTFU, you slow ass! You are so slow, the only thing you can pass is gas! Carry on

I've never been passed on a solo ride. However, it's rare that I see more than a couple riders a week.

In my last race, we started 10 minutes before the Women 3's on a 22 mile course with 1500ft of climbing. I was passed by the entire women's field about 10 miles in.
In my defense, I caught and passed some of the women's 4's that started 10 minutes before us. (I was dropped by my 5's group and finished about 15 minutes behind the winner.)

No loathing here, just desire to work harder. There are countless people with more time/money/dedication that can train harder/afford coaches/train with power/etc.
I simply cannot compete with that on 6 (average) hours of training a week and I'm not pretending that I can.

Categories are irrelevant. Speed is irrelevant. You will be assimilated. Your cycling and self-loathing distinctiveness will be added to our own.

Resistance is futile.

Now it's (2) women. The second one was E. Stevens, and since she's the fastest woman in America at the moment, I can't feel too bad about that.

I (newbie) don't get it. What's the big deal about passing or being passed on a ride? Now if it's a racing event, that would be different.

And even if you are at an elite level, I still have 3 friends (well, actually 2 friends + 1 professional aquaintance of my wife's...but that's less than 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon, right?) who I'm certain will give you a run for your money.

It is just plain astonishing how fast some people can ride a bike, irrespective of gender.

I'd probably use the excuse that most fit women are more similar in build to Alberto Contador than I am, and thus actually have a natural advantage. :-)

(Although unfortunately that line of reasoning does not help my wife, who is 5'11" / 145 and can't climb ANY hill if it's over 2% grade).

I do experience plenty of self loathing on group rides when a 55-60 year old guy is faster than me (I'm 40). I have no excuse for that!

On my commute, with my under-inflated tires, soft front suspension and steel frame (I know, I know- I'm embarrased to even type it) I've dropped people in full team kits and CF bikes, and been dropped by senior commuters with panniers and fenders ... there's always going to be people faster, and slower than you, and while you strive to improve, you have to accept it.

You should only loathe yourself when you fail to put in 100% to your ride- because then you admit that you're not willing to try and get faster.

I was riding my CX-bike on gravelroads and heading into the steepest meanest hill on my ride I was passed by a woman. And not a young one either from the look of her skinny legs. I could not reel her in but passed her a mile after the hill. Some miles later she was still drafting me so I waved her on and started talking. Very nice woman some years my junior that started riding when her kids had grown up. Now she wins the womens overall in some Marathon Xc Mtb rides. When it comes to running I,ve always known a lot of women will pass me, on a bike us guys have a natural advantage it seems. (more muscles for a given weight perhaps ?)
