Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A high rate of acceleration is a key trait here too.

Ok lets be serious, 42mph is ridiculous. If you can get up to 32mph by yourself on flat land, you're pretty well off. It's true that the most important thing is the speed with which you can apply said power.

Guess that depends on who you ride with. Some groups 32mph may win a sprint and another group 32 will get you tossed out the back.

Someone missed the sprinting thread in the racing forum.

Yes even amateur veterans are sprinting at speeds above 32 mph. OK the lower grades may only be getting to those speeds but then they aren't calling themselves sprinters. 42 mph+ is where the top sprinters are at.

32 mph may be sprinting for non racers, but in a race, you'll regularly hit 32 mph. My leadout for about 0.3 miles (on a 0.4 mile course) was about 34 mph and I'm no leadout man and I'm only a (weak) Cat 3.

42 mph is very fast for a sprint in a Cat 3 race. 40 mph is regularly attainable though, even after a hard one hour race.

Yeah, our A race Tuesday Nighter sprints in the A race seem to end up in that 37-39 mph range. I think it's pretty flat there, the wind has usually died down, but is a tiny bit headwind.
