Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

compact crank sprint

will you be just as fast in a sprint if you race with a compact compared to your traditional crankset?

Assuming this is a serious question, it depends. As long as you're not in a downhill tailwind sprint, you'll be fine.

Yes, assuming you are turning the same gear ratio at the same cadence, e.g. 50-11 is a smidgen bigger than 53-12

Style of sprinting counts too. A track sprinter would laugh at a 50x11 and say it's too high for any sprint unless it was a paced one (and even then I doubt they'd use one). A road sprinter who doesn't spin as much and is very strong will think it's too small a gear.

I sprint at perhaps 120 rpm max. I used to change my rings to reflect my shape - 51T, using the 12, then a 54x12, then back to the 51x11. Finally, when I was humming along in that gear, I'd put the 54T back on. After a year or two I lent my 51 out and never got it back. So now I just go up the cassette, one gear at a time. Kinda stuck in the 13T range right now

50x11 at 120rpm is almost 43mph. so unless you are sprinting against Boonen you should have plenty of gear.

Even if I was sprinting against Boonen, I'd have plenty of gear... just wouldn't expect to beat him in any gearing.

This really is the answer. If 50x11 isn't big enough for your sprint you need either:

1) a pro contract, or

2) learn to spin.
