speedplay
Im a full time cyclist who is racing on the european scene at the mo and im suffering from knee problems!I was wondering if any1 could tell me some goods and bads about speedplay peddles

i use the speedplay X2's and they have resolved any knee pain i had while using Dura Ace Road Pedals and SPD Shimano pedals before those. I got used to the float on the second or third ride. Clipping out is very smooth also.

I'll 2nd what djbowen1 said, except I started with fixed Look, and after anything over 30 miles my knees would swell up with fluid. Switched to Time and it solved the problem! SpeedPlay now for the last 3 years and it's been a match made in heaven. I adjusted to the 'float' of the new SpeedPlays after the 1sr or 2nd ride, and never looked back. (Knees were torn up playing Hockey, but I'll never learn).

Twenty five years of distance running destroyed my knees. Speedplay X2s are the only pedals I can use. I love them.

I've ridden speedplays for about seven years now and wouldn't ride anything else. Once you get past the insane amount of float they have (this takes a ride or two), you'll never go back.

I switched from eggbeaters to Speedplays And my knees loved the change. I also got rid of hotspots in my feet on longer rides (30-40+). I must be weird cuz I never had any problems getting used to the float. They felt good on the first ride.

Switched from Time Attack to Speedplay Frogs - no ACL in either knee - switch has been great. Like the Specialized pro ATB shoe w/ Frogs on Bacchetta SWB.

I ride X-2s and love them. You will not have any problem with the float- much more made of this subject than it deserves. Cliping out (or in for that matter) is a snap. Just be sure to keep the springs on the cleats lubed.

Like most of the other posts, I too started with Campy quills, then when the fixed looks came out I switched to those. After a few years my knees started hurting. I tried floating spd and look pedals - no luck. Then my Dr. (a serious distance cycler) suggested speedplay and loaned me a pair. I bought my own a week later. Another plus is that they are one of the lighter pedals too. Just make sure you set the proper fore/aft saddle position. If you are a gear masher, try slightly a higher cadence (I try to stay around 88-90 for endurance work). I did all these things and my knees don't bother me anymore. Oh, the float - you will find it strange at first, then you'll come to love it. I also have a pair of the MTB Frog Speedplays - not suitible for racing on a roadie, but in some ways they are even better than the road speedplays - you just think you want to unclip and you foot is free, but they are real secure when riding.
