Any suggestions for a race-only tubular tire?
I just got my Zipp 404's and I'm looking for a pair of tubulars to race with. Here are my guidelines-
Race-day only, 70% crits
I live in AZ, so 95% dry conditions
Any suggestions?

Not sure how this thread slipped through without an answer, but I've heard a lot of good things about Continental Sprinter Black Chili and Vittoria Evo CX. fwiw the last time I raced on tubulars (10+ years ago) I was quite happy with the Sprinter and the Corsa CX/CG for crits, road races, and outdoor velodrome racing. The only reason I know the current suggestions is that I've been reading up in anticipation of building a set of tubulars for myself in the next year.

Veloflex Record
Veloflex Record's tubulars are the fastest, lightest tubulars. Preferably, track glued to your Zipps. You could use softer road glue (slightly more rolling resistance), or you could use Tufo Extreme tape (the most rolling resistance, but also the most convenience).
The latest rolling resistance test confirm what I'm saying incidently, this is not just my humble opinion.
Fastest and lightest is a good combination for racing, but I'd encourage people racing against me to use some other tubs

I used the Continental Competition tubulars for exactly one ride before I sold my wheels.....at I think $140/tire retail, they're a bit on the pricey side. If I paid full price for them, I think I would've been a bit irked. They weren't anything like "Holy crap this tire is awesome". More like...."well...ok....it's a...tire...."
They were also the 19mm ones, which I also didn't seem to like either. Unfortunately the shop didn't have the 22mm's in stock and I got sick of waiting due to valve extender issues and Bontrager tubulars that we ordered (oddly enough they were for Bonty carbon wheels, and weren't compatible. Go figure.). Soooo the shop owner gave me the Conti's for like $85/tire instead.
I guess if you could find them for like $70/80 a tire, they would be ok. Certainly not $140 a tire though.

Two popular tubulars for racing are the Veloflex Carbon tubular and the Conti Comp 22 tubular. Both are great tubulars, if I had to favor one it would be the veloflex.
Both will work very well for your racing, and both are what I would consider race day only as you'll get about 2000+ miles out of them.

• Can you use TUFO tape? Yes and no—in other words, at your own risk. Some people
have used TUFO tape with our wheels without having any issues. There are two types:
regular and extreme, which is intended for warmer weather use and is VERY sticky.
In rare cases, removal of the extreme tape has actually pulled the carbon tire bed
away from the rim, ruining the rim. In these instances, it is our policy to offer crash
replacement pricing on a new rim, but we WILL NOT cover it under the manufacturer’s
warranty

veloflex for value for money or go nuts and get fmb or dugast.
for what it's worth dugast was bought out a few years ago and is not exactly the same anymore.
Veloflex or Vittorias are pretty excellent tyres, pick what suits the roads where you live from their range.
Track specific glues and gluing technique is not really that advisable for the road. It's not usually able to cope with getting soaked with water if it rains.
Just use vittoria mastic for glue and don't worry about rr. If your worried that much about it don't get conti or tufo tyres, they feel like bricks are stuck to the rims.

And for race tires I say Veloflex Criterium 22's, Vittora CX 21's, as as stated above the Conti Comps with Black Chili are looking to be performing well.

I think I'm going to go with the Vittoria Corsa CX 21's. I rode them today and they were buttery smooth.

I've got two I'll sell you with 60 miles on them for $100.
Too narrow for my Stinger 90;s.
