Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Frame size advice please!

I have been looking for a steel frame bike for months and have found a 56cm Schwinn Peloton for the right price. Problem is I normally ride a 58cm frame. I am 6ft tall. Can I make the 56cm bike work without it being too squirrely?

What size stem do you have on the 58?
How far back is your saddle on the 58?
What are the seat tube angles and top tube lengths of your 58 vs. the 56?

The stem on the 58 is 110.

The saddle position on the 58 is fairly centered (not agressively forward or back).

Seat tube angle is 73 on both.

Actual top tube on 58 bike is 56 with a virtual of 57 (semi compact). The top tube on the 56 is 57.

Thanks for you help!

You should be fine since the TTs are the same length

Yes, you should be fine on it. You might want to use more spacers under the stem on the 56 to get the handlebars as high as on the 58.

6"2 and i ride a 60 Peloton. great frame BTW. my very first Cdale was a 56 thinking i can just raise a seat or get some real long stem, bad idea. just wait and another nice steel will be around in a 58 or what ever size dont be pressured into purchase on a bad fitting frame. mho

Given that inseam, I have you at a 57CM. 56 would probably work for you, a lot of very good riders actually prefer a frame that is slightly smaller. You can work with the stem, etc. to get a good fit. My inseam is 31.5" and I ride a 54cm Trek. You should be able to ride a range of sizes with seat adjustments, etc. You can try the fit calculator on www.competitivecyclist.com. You end up getting 3 different fits, the smallest being what they call their aggressive fit. If you end up buying the bike, I would withhold judgement for a few weeks as any changes takes time to get used to. Hope that this helps.

i'm 6ft with a 32" (pants) inseam. i ride a 56 felt z25 and a 56 soma smoothie es.

the soma has a pretty long effective tt (even compared to felt). i probably could have gone a size smaller (i was actually advised to do so by a few people).

if you're interested, i have a nib 56 cm soma steel frame with carbon fork.
