I wouldn't go that high for a first bike unless you absolutely think she is going to take to it. In that case I would look at the under $750 thread since you are close to that anyway.

Buy a bike that fits. If it is not comfortable, she won't ride it.
Also, if she is not going to ride regularly (once a week or more), then think about a hybrid instead of a road bike. Hybrids are more comfortable at slower speeds and for infrequent riders.

Try the Felt FW40.
My girlfriend just picked one up. She tried a comparable entry level bikes including Jamis and Cannondale, and liked the feel of the Felt the best. If you're on a budget, the Jamis Ventura Sport can be had for roughly ~500. Just go shopping with her, and see what she likes to ride

Remember, buying from bikes direct will result in receiving a bike you essentially have to assemble (and double-check everything already slapped together). This is coming from a happy BD product owner.
More importantly:
We need a picture of her to completely identify the perfect frame size and type of bike for her. Thank You.

At 5' 1" my recommendation is that your girlfriend needs a bike with 650c wheels or even 24" wheels. There really is a difference for small riders and it will be more comfortable. There maybe not as many around but what you can look for is juvenile racing bikes and the good thing is that they are usually inexpensive.

That's the lamest post I've seen on this forum. Even as a joke it's so ordinary that there's no humor to it.
I got my wife a hybrid. She test-rode a road bike too, but it turned out that the feel was simply more aggressive than she wanted. She rides her hybrid 10 to 15 miles at a time, which is about all I can hope for. If I had gotten her a bike she was uncomfortable on, it wouldn't get used. Normally I'm really against "comfort" bikes and "hybrids", but if they encourage a person to ride, they're the right tool.
