Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Schwinn World Sport

I am looking at a Schwinn world sport on craigs list. It looks to be an early 90's or late 80's model. The person selling it wants $190 for it. It is in good shape he just replaced the habdle bars with new aluminum handle bars, new pedals, and new cables. I was wondering if this would be a good price for this bike or if i should keep looking. I am looking for a good reliable bike under $300. I was also wondering if you had any other suggestions on a good reliable road bike besides this one. Any help would be great. Thank you

tell him 150. then test ride it. if it feels like its adjustable to fit you, then get it. if it doesnt fit, run.

$190 seems on the higher end for a World Sport... I've seen a few in the $100-$150 range. See if you can haggle... but prices can be regional too.

Make sure it fits you, if so then go for it.

Too much! I bought one for $10 at a yard sale. Not a great bike to start with. Much better can be had for $200. 5-10X what it is worth.

For that price you should be looking at a Schwinn World Traveler or a Premis.

I didnt know they had World Sports in the late 80s early 90s.. I always think of late 70s early 80s when I hear World Sport. If it really is a late 80s early 90s bike then that could be an ok price.. post pics?

I paid $100 for a '90 Traveler, I still am happy with the price I paid.
I don't really like the sounds of your deal. That should buy you more.
But either way it's not a huge investment, and if you love the bike and the way it rides and seems reliable... maybe?

Say in '91 there was a World Sport.
It had a hi-ten fork.

My first real road rig was a 1987 or 88 Schwinn World Sport. I paid about $350 for it new.

OP - the price is high. You can find World Sports in garage sales for little $$. Then again how much is your time worth that you spend searching. A world sport is a nice rig, but keep in mind that most were 27" wheels instead of 700C. I was able to run a modern group on the bike, but it took some work.

I paid $50 for my 1985 World Sport on Ebay 5 years ago. The condition was "good". I converted it to single speed and use it daily as my commuter.

I had a World Sport in the late 80's - I don't remember, but I'm pretty sure I didn't pay over $200 for it.

I hope it doesn't use the Shimano Front Freewheeling System like my mother World Tourist. If it does you are in for some long and stressful repairs if something breaks.

You must have bought it used then. Mine - new - was $350. I know because I had to save up for it for a long time. Hard to raise 3 bills when you have no job.

If that bike fits you, make a lowball offer. You can definitely find a World Sport for less. I found one discarded by the side of the road. No front wheel, but otherwise perfect.

It's a great errand runner, but not the kind of bike you want to log alot of miles on, in my opinion. It is very heavy compared to modern road bikes.

I'm a big classic Schwinn fan, but for that kind of money you should be getting a Le Tour or above.
