Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I used to have the exact same problem I tried bananas, electrolytes etc.. A friend gave me a free sample of sportlegs and it worked really well. Also it helped with lactic burn when climbing. have had much success with it.

I try to keep some sport beans or gu in my jersey, and that seems to help delay the onset... but two weeks running its been the same problem.

Any idea what I have been missing?
Same thing used to happen to me, and it happened again tonight. I tried various electrolyte replacements, etc with minimal results. My problem was that I was not drinking enough before the ride started. Tonight I rode without drinking enough beforehand and sure enough, at about 1.25 hrs into the ride I was cramping in the calves and feet.

There's a reason PE teachers tell us to stretch.

Remember that stretching helps most for future rides. I've been making sure to do it more lately, and I am MUCH more comfortable on the bike.

I also hit the gatorade an hour before a ride. Seems to help too.

everyone here means well but there is a lot of misinformation here. Your problem is YOUR BODY NEEDS MORE WATER! in long rides take a drink with a bit of sodium and a bit of glucose.

without that small bit of sodium you will not hold the water well and get nausea and dizzyness. if you continue with out replenishing that sodium you will faint. that happens because the body secretes it in your sweat, thats why you taste "salty" after a ride.

simple hu?

I disagree on the stretching unless its after the ride but coincidentally gatorade has all that you need from a drink WATER, SODIUM, GLUCOSE. simple.

Water does not have any electrolytes so more water does nothing but keep you from being thirsty but will not fix the problem. Electrolytes consist of more than sodium so find a good gel pack or sport drink besides sugar water gatorade. HEED from hammer nutrition is some of the best stuff out there I think. Honey stinger gel packs work great also.
