Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My computer hasn't been working, so I replaced the battery last night and set off to work on my bicycle this morning.

My average speed ... 41.6 km/h

41.6km/h average and 86.5km/h max... you're faster than an average scooter

Every time I see a thread like this it's posted in km/h and I'm blown away until I remember that I live in a little place called America. We don't use them kinda numbers round here with the cool kids........

Edit: Nice speed btw

My computer was working fine (as far as I could tell) but it said that my max speed was 93.6 mph. I reset it and it hasn't happened again. What causes things like that to happen?

Well, I could have sworn I set the wheelsize correctly ... especially after I did get it wrong, realized my error, and had to fix it. However, I've set it again, and will try it again.

I think the thing I found the oddest was that my speed and the distance I travelled was exactly twice what it should have been.

What I have noticed is that the sensors at intersections that detect cars mess with your speed (if you have a wireless computer). The sensors I am talking about are the circles at intersections that are darker than the asphalt.

That's about 25mph. I have to pedal as hard as I can on flat surface and if I am lucky can maintain that pace for oh, about 15 seconds!! The numbers your putting out...AWESOME!!

Are you guys saying that my heart rate really wasn't 190 a minute into my ride at 16mph with a cadence of 85???

A block later my heart rate was back to 85. One thing I find fascinating since I've been using my Edge is trying to keep my Cadence and heart rate equal to each other. It's a fun game that definitely helps on recovery rides.

Do you have a couple of spare magnets on your spokes or something?

Now that I think about it, that may be a good practical joke.

Yeah wireless can be like that. My wireless Trek cyclocomputer (of affectionately dubbed psychocomputer) freaks out in vicinity of shoplifting gates. I have seen speeds in excess of 100 mph.

i'm sure you're partially joking, but some 'mericans, like myself, actually do use kilometers on the bike. i like the bigger numbers ("i can sprint to 50!"), plus all the brevets i do are measured in km, so i figured why not? and now when the TdF announcers says, "11km to go" i don't have to wonder how many miles that is, i just know.

btw i've hit 85 km/h on a downhill out in west seattle - but my goal this summer is 100 km/h. just need to find the right hill...
