Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just got rid of my 4 cyl. 94 Toyota Camry with 298,000 miles and no AC, leaked oil, needed brakes, hole in the exhaust so you could hear it from a mile away and it still got 34 mpg.

BMW's have a perpetual waiver from beaterdom, even rust-rocket 3 series with ratty headliners.

I tried really hard to turn my BMW into a beater, I scratched the hell out of it in an alley in Grenoble and then ran leaded gas through it for 3 weeks in Italy. Even when the local punks peeled all the logos off it was futile, I gave up and sold it to a lawyer.

where are the rusty plymouth minivans? the oil burner fiestas? duck-taped door handle subarus? c'mon people!

Most of the cars in this thread are not beaters...try sub $1000 300,000k+ vehicles (am I now a beater elitist?). My bike is worth more than both of them and it's only a Allez Sport :-D

Don't knock 'em though, best investments I've ever made!

Update with pictures:

Shortly after driving _through_ a deer at 110km/hr

A good car is one you can fix with a hammer and a trip to the wreckers.

That is great! You got really lucky - you must've grazed the deer. My dad hit a deer way back in the day in his '75 Monte Carlo - even though all the parts in front were replaced, the car never got over the frame damage! (a permanent lean.)

50,000 Mile 98 Ford Contour<<<<2008 Record equipped Eriksen could also throw the Moots on the rack for extra bonus points.

Here is the car:

and here is my bike:

KBB says it is 2600 for "fair" but due to the huge dents which have been quoted at over 2,000 to fix it is technically closer to worth $600

the bike i bought for $1100

so i think it should be considered a "beater"

and by the way, I agree that half the cars here have failed the beater test at minimum it better be worth less than 3k and have over 125k miles.

95 Toyota Camry/06 Trek 1000
They're probably worth about the same (Nothing!) They both serve they're purpose though. It's the only two door Camry I've ever seen, and the only option it has is A.C. which works great. Almost at 172,000

rooftest - yeah I definitely got lucky.

The front corner caught the deer square in the shoulder / stomach area and tore it in two (we were traveling at 110km/hr and I had no time to hit the brakes). After I made sure my gf was ok, I walked back along the highway with a flash light and all I could find was a pile of innards on the side of the road...pretty much lined up like they would've been inside the deer (a testament to velocity at which I hit it, looked like it feel straight down onto the pavement). I'm fairly certain the rest of the poor animal was flung far into the median or was carried away by her friend (who was a could steps behind her) who ended up wearing her.

My car was covered in hair and grass from the stomach but there was surprisingly little blood.
