Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: Trek Madone 3.1

Would buy one tomorrow if I had the disposable income for it. I've never ridden a Ridley, so don't take that as an experienced endorsement.

Best bike I've ever ridden. Mine's an '04. Same frame as the one on CC right now. I have to fly a lot for racing and it is very easy to pack/unpack. Stiff, comfy, etc. I've been switching out my TT bikes every few months because I'm really picky and I can't manage to get one I like, but I've had the Excalibur for a while and don't have any plans to switch anytime soon.

The same frame as far as design and geometry go, but the lay-up of the carbon, type of carbon and construction have changed drastically since 2004. It's a waaaay better bike now. They used different and more carbon around the BB/chainstay junction in an effort to stop the frames from breaking. Same with the newer Damocles frames.

I really liked my Excalibur when I had it. It was just about the perfect frameset. I broke it at the BB/chainstay junction and swapped up to a Damocles. 12k miles later, it broke in the exact same spot as the Excalibur. According to Sinclair Imports and Ridley, the 04 and 05 frames (Excalibur and Damocles) were a bit underbuilt in the BB.

I swapped to a Helium (which is essentially an overbuilt Excalibur with a seatmast) and it is easily the best bike I've ever ridden. Light, stiff, comfy, reactive...and no dead carbon ride.

The CC Excalibur deal is a pretty good deal for a complete bike. You really can't go wrong with it.

Been on an Excal for 1.5 years now. I love the way this frame rides! Better than any Madone I've owned. Comfortable, stiff and responsive. A great racing bike. And if you destroy the thing in a crash you can get another and still be way ahead of what most people spend on one bike. Trust me the Excal is as good as anything out there.

My only concern is the wheels. Will Fulcrum 7's stand up to the abuse of a portly gentleman?

Thinking that they can be used as a training wheelset.

Bikes: '07 Excalibur, '08 Anthem 1, and some others

I got one of those CC deals when they had 'em (slightly) cheaper. Great bike and deal. Haven't tried the wheels though. I had a TCR advanced before, and though the TCR was probably a bit more nuanced, it wasn't worth the price of admission to replace, considering you get this Excalibur fully built with great parts for 700 less than the frame alone for the TCR. Maybe not the best frame for a weight weenie, but it handles well, accelerates like a rocket, is reasonably comfortable and fits me well. To be fair, I basically stripped mine and put the parts from my old bike on it, but out of the box it would make a fantastic race bike and has enough steerer left to make an ok 'century' bike.

+1- owned an Excalibur- moved up to a Damo ('08). Excalibur is a fantastic bike.
