Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling without socks and gloves

Seems to me a lot of people find gloves a necessity. Does anyone here ride without gloves or socks?

Edit: Typo, yes I meant without. Guess that's what happen when you drink and type.

I think you mean without?

I have recently stopped wearing gloves, but I always ware socks... well sometimes if I'm making adjustments to my bike and I want to make sure everything is where i want it, I will kick off the sandals, slip on the shoes and spin around the block. Other than that I always ware socks.

I always wear socks. I don't wear gloves. I used to, but forgot to put them on one day and didn't have any trouble. So I stopped.

I do wear gloves when MTB'ing.

I always wear gloves if for no other reason than it allows me to clean debris off of tires.

Yup, no sox or gloves when riding a beach cruiser.

When I ride road or mountain, always wear sox and gloves.

After wiping out and getting road rash on the palms of my hands I always wear gloves. I always wear socks, because my shoes aren't as comfortable without them.

I have issues staying upright on my bike. Gloves always.
Socks most of the time. That is except when I am riding in spd sandals on my commuter.

but how are you going to explain to your coworkers that perfect tan without glove lines or sock lines?

I don't use gloves on extremely short rides, less than 5mins each way, that's about it.

When I sweat, my hands sweat, too, and make the levers slick. Gloves for me, and full-finger ones at that -- although finding gloves that are long enough to keep from binding my index finger-to-thumb is a challenge.

Ah feels nekkid without my gloves and socks. Nasty sweaty bare feet in shoes? Gloves provide padding.

I wear both socks and gloves.

Half the year I'd freeze my hands and feet off if I didn't.

Wow, great timing for this. I forgot to wear my gloves today... and I was going through all the reasons why I would never do that again. It is a really different feeling.

I swear by gloves. I even have a dot on the back of my hand from tanning through the adjustment area.

In hot weather though, I find them too hot, and will ride without them.

I sometimes don't wear socks because my shoes are a half size too small with anything but really thin socks.

I wear gloves and socks, for some of the reasons mentioned above. But I'm thinking about skipping the shorts and jersey to cut weight and wind resistance.

I would love to ride without gloves when it's hot, but I won't. If you've ever crashed and ground all kinds of dirt and tiny travel into the palms of your hands, you'd know why gloves are so important.

Yes, you can grind all kinds of crud into your arms, lets, torso, etc. However, when you do this to your hands, you'll find that everything you do is really painful and inconvenient. Also, because hands are an odd shape and move quite a bit, keeping out infection is tough.

Even if it's smoking hot out I must have my gloves. And my gloves have those little perforations.. .keeps it cool enough for me.

I've done that ....

Queensland, Australia 2004 ... temperature about 40C, riding a gravel road in the jungle without gloves ... hit a section of soft gravel/sand and went down.

I tore apart my left knee (my left knee always gets it), and ground gravel into my hands. It seems to me I did wear gloves the next couple days to cushion the damaged hand ... I had to cycle about 169 kms to get back to civilization ... but when I got cycling again after recovering from that, I rode without my gloves again.
