Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Blog of dude that experimented with doping

Posted this in Pcad's Cadel love fest thread. Its a good read and I though worthy of its own thread:

Read that article a few months ago.

It made me want to try doping. Sadly, the strongest drug here is coffee.

Researchers at Amgen Inc., a California pharmaceutical company, figured out how to synthesize it in quantities that could help people who weren't producing enough red blood cells, like cancer patients suffering from anemia.
And Amgen sponsored the TOC....

Think about what you just said. Boeing also created planes that brought down the WTC, should they all be put in Guantanamo? Sometimes people use products for purposes other than what they were intended for.

I read that sprinters used to eat the meat of fast animals (gazelles, cheetahs, etc.) in the belief that it would make them faster.

My point is the irony in how things come to be and that includes Boeing as well. I certainly have not thought of even putting a blame on Amgen. That's you putting words in my mouth. Think about your retort.

I did not know that Amgen actually developed synthetic EPO until now.

IT WASN'T UNTIL I ADDED EPO to my diet, two weeks later, that I began to notice serious differences.

"You have to be careful with this stuff," Dr. Jones warned after explaining the routine: three injections a week of 1,500 IU each. I was expecting a lecture on the dangers of thickened blood, but he meant something else: he wanted me to take it easy while racing, lest people catch on.

"One of my bike racers who isn't really a climber went on a training ride and dropped the best climbers on his team," he said. "They were like, 'Um, what are you taking?'"

I read the article....I'm 55 and if I could get some HGH at decent prices and with no real side effects (some water retention- PFAH!) I'd probably use it. Clear up my eyesight, ease joint pain, put some more lead in my pencil, stop my hair from falling out.
I don't plan on living forever, but it would be nice to smooth that road out a little bit. The steroids sounded spooky.

My eyes have been getting worse in the last year. I'd consider the HGH.

EPO and strokes? Didn't Conatador have a stroke or something?

This was certainly entertaining and interesting reading. I am a physician myself, and ironically enough, I am scared to death even by Tylenol. Unlike the lay person, I have the misfortune of seeing the worst failures and side effects of most things only. I don't get to see too many of the good stories, so I would be very scared to use any of these substances.

Now, that is not to deny that some of them may have a very positive effect in small enough dosages to reverse a lot of things that we face as we age. They WILL NOT disappear, but they will come on much much slower. It is a tough one for sure.............

I believe this has been posted a few times over the years. Since I don't race, it's definitely got me thinking, "hey, I should try that". Then I come to my senses in that, if not for cheating in competition, why would I do it?

Chuck Palahniuk (guy who wrote Fight Club) did a similar experiment with steroids and weightlifting. It's a chapter of this book:
