Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Gear Questions?

Hey guys I just got my bike tuned up this weekend and I feel like the lowest gear might not be feeling quite right . . . can you guys pedal backwards when you're in the lowest gear? It sounds a little weird like it might not be catching exactly right. Every other gear i can spin my pedals backwards . . . what do you think?

Check that the chain is not too tight. I had a chain installed that was too short and when I shifted up to the biggest cog and on the big chain ring the chain was extremly tight and I could not spin the cranks backwards.

Can you not pedal backwards, or is just making a strange noise?

Check your limit screws. If those are set correctly, check your derailleur hanger.

If your derailer is out of alignment, it may work OK when in the normal direction, but make noise and skip when backwards.

Don't think I've anything to add over the above. If the other gears are shifting, I guess it's nothing to do with the tension in your cable (barrel adjuster).

Any chance it could be the B screw with the derailleur too close to the biggest sprocket? Either way, check out the park tool web site, look under repairs. They've got great step-by-step instructions for rear derailleur adjustment
