Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Great hill climbing rides - The List

What are some of the great climbing rides in the lower 48? Especially those that offer a timing option for those so inclined.

The first ones I can think of are:

1. Mt. Mitchell
2. Brasstown
3. Everest Challenge
4. Mt. Washington

Others that deserve being on a list of "gotta do someday"?

The triple bypass, evergreen colorado, saturday following july 4th. 120 mi, 10000 ft climbing, over juniper pass, a sixteen mile climb from evergreen, down into idaho springs, then a 35 mile(mol) climb from idaho springs up over loveland pass(11,990ft elev) down into keystone, then over vail pass, and ending in avon. great ride, very challenging not only the length and climbing but the elevation also.

the death ride comes to mind.

Also there is a Mt. Diablo hillclimb (~1 hour if you're pretty fast)

edit: someone beat me to the deathride

Nothing beats Mt Washington in raw steepness in the US, 4700 ft rise in what 7.5 miles and no way to practice it at all.

Werd.

Washington is the most difficult climb that is road bike-able in the world.

Mt. Evans. The race is called The Bob Cook Memorial Mt. Evans Hill Climb, but plenty of people ride it every day that the road is open.

They used to open the road for one day as a practice day. Not sure if they still do. There is also the time after the road is closed, but still clear (I think I did Whiteface that way, but not Washington).

Oh, I meant after it is closed for the season. I know I rode Whiteface really early one morning to avoid the closure. I think we were descending as the first cars came up. I also think I rode it in October one year, after it was closed for the season. I remember it being really cold and having a dusting of snow. I am not good with dates from 20 years ago though (or 20 days, for that matter)

Uhm yeah these are mountains lol I was going to suggest the Donner Lake route 40 to Suger Bowl. It is about 5 miles, 1,500 feet, and absolutly stunning!
I did it over 4th of july weekend and can't wait to do it again. It isn't a mountain ride but well worth it.

Descending at 50 mph in 35 degree temps does not sound too fun at my age...

However, a lot of things I did 20 years ago would not be too fun now...

Holy crap batman - even if I only did 3 or 4 of these a year it would take several years to do them all at least once.

I need to renegotiate my vacation policy...or maybe just take early retirement.

I'm not familar with all of the climbs refered to above, but the climbs in Everest Challenge are most certainly mountains. The last climb itself is over 6,000 feet of ascent and finishes over at 10,000 feet elevation.

who cares about hills? mountains are where its at.

for instance our three-pass, 400km brevet (the profile in my sig).. that was snoqualmie pass, blewett pass, and stevens pass, all in one day.

or our four-pass, 600k route.

but roadies don't do much over 150 miles, so y'all are probably shaking your head in disgust. so i present you with this, which is much more reasonable: https://www.redmondcyclingclub.org/RA...formation.html

i'll be doing ramrod in a few days!

Yeah, the Bob Cook Memorial Mt. Evans Hillclimb is 7,000' of climbing up to over 14,000' of elevation. Definitely a mountain. That said, any "hillclimb" ride worth traveling for is probably on a mountain or two. It would be pretty short, otherwise.
