Keeping a bike in your college dorm?
I'm going off to college next year and I'll be racing for the cycling team. For those of you that have been through college while training, where did you keep your bike? Obviously locking it outside is not an option. Thanks for the suggestions!

It would depend on the dorm/college policy. I know one of the dorms at my college had an indoor basement room for bikes. Still not the safest, but better than locking up outside.
Also, I know that our school lets you keep it inside your dorm room as long as there's adequate room and your roomate agrees.
And for a high schooler... damn those are some nice bikes. Rich kids these days..

Completely depends on your dorms. Some of them will be big enough but I really doubt it. Mine had locker cages downstairs where I had to keep things I had like a bike or anything big that doesn't fit under your bed.
Maybe your team will have a storage room of their own for all the bikes and gear and what not?

I would find a stud and hang it from the wall or ceiling or build a bunk and put it underneath the bed.

I kept two bikes in my small room; you just have to sacrifice some space for the bikes. I fit my mountain bike under my bed and then had the road bike just in the way. I had to crawl over it to get into my bed.

I wouldn't keep a nice bike (especially those bikes - damn) in anything but your room. Basement bike lockup places aren't safe, I've seen bikes stolen from them. You should probably look into some sort of rack to keep them up off the ground because space will be very limited. If you can loft your bed, just keep them under there. Some schools don't let you loft your bed because people like to fall off of them and die.
What the guy above me said is a good idea provided you can drill holes into the walls. My dorm had painted brick walls which I guess I could've drilled into and then filled at the end, but they told us we weren't allowed to drill.

We built bunk-beds in our room with 4X4's and 2X4's, so we had storage underneath.
Just make sure you trust your roommate, and keep in mind all his degenerate friends
that may be hanging-around when you aren't there!
Good luck, and try to study some.

Bikes in rooms was a big no no @ my school. Fire marshal would do inspections and cite you for them. Apparently they are a fire hazard.

I brought this shelf-kinda-thing (yes I learned that word at college) and that piece of furniture that hold you clothes was about the same height. so i put the rear wheel in the shelf above my head, and the fork on the thing that holds clothes. I had another bike against the wall. your problem is you have too many bikes. i would buy your zipps for $100 if you need the space. nice bikes though. do you sell drugs?

as others have said, it really does depend on your school's policy. And even further, it depends on your room and roommate. I didn't have a nice bike while I lived in the dorms, so it stayed outside all the time, even through the winter.
But, most of the dorms have bike rooms with either racks or a chain that you can lock your bike to. They didn't get used as much as they could have been but whatever. Aside from that, some people did keep their bikes in their rooms, much to their roommates dismay. Even with lofted beds, my dorm rooms weren't very big, especially with a couch and TV and such. So I wouldn't plan on keeping it in your room unless you don't mind sleeping with it (literally).
I've gotta imagine, however, that a school with a racing team is going to have a place set aside for bike lockup.

Both my road bikes stay in my room on a stand or on the trainer. My mtb stays on a rack locked up.
I'm getting a 2 bike rack this year to put the roadies on. It's not a big deal, everything fits in pretty easy. I don't really throw parties in my room though, since I'd hate to see something stupid happen to my bikes
Edit: I should mention that I live in a single by myself. I didn't last year, but it still didn't present any problem.

My dorm didnt let me keep my bike inside, but the bike I took to college was a PoS for that reason. Seeing how youre on the cycling team I'm sure you can get some sort of note from your coach asking permission to keep it in your room if they give you a hard time.

if the piping breaks by having <20lbs on it, the piping fails and the school should pay for the damages. Besides, the pipe has a bend in it which is thicker than the rest and it's also really close to the wall, the pipe should hardly flex.
I wouldn't be going to a college that doesn't doesn't allow bikes in the dorms, especially when they can take up very little room if hung on the wall above your desk.

Like the above photo, me and my roomie (he was a mountain biker, I was a roadie), we bought some S-hooks at Home Depot, slung those over the pipes, then hung our bikes vertically against the wall. Was a pain space-wise in our tiny dorm room, but we made do. You can do it, but you might be leaving one or two of those rides at home come fall.

Agreed. Universities aren't one organization. The racing team is often a club and is run just like any other club on campus. Even if it was a campus sport, the school would not feel obligated to make provisions for the storage of any equipment.
To the OP: Contact whoever is in charge of student housing. Write their name, the date and time of the conversation, and what they said just in case someone else contradicts it.

I'd even lock it up inside the room if possible. Those bikes are nice and light, and dorm rooms aren't exactly high security places.

You really need to pay attention to school policy. I was not allowed to hang ANYTHING from the ceiling pipes; not even something that is obviously not going to rip them down. If you take the above approach make sure to keep your door shut or take it down for room inspections.
