Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I had thought I remembered a teammate's time putting him in the 6W/kg range for 15 minutes, but I went back and calculated it and it was only 5.3. Several guys can all do the climb in roughly the same time, including a cat 1, 2, and 3. Unfortunately, all of the really fast guys I know (incl. domestic pros) don't time themselves! It's easy to inflate the numbers in our heads, so I don't mind the reality check, thanks

Note that I don't claim my own power anywhere near this. I just did the same climb for a PR yesterday in a time that would put me at about 4.76W/kg.

Yes but by the time you reach the top of the climb, we'll already be at the finish line.

My best 5 minute power is 5.01 W/kg...

What does that mean...

I am still a recreational, well marbled, middle aged hill climber...

I have to say under 8 MPH, but then again, I weight 156, so I guess I am disqualified.

Seriously though, I say under 8 because most of the climbs I do are long and I pace myself. Sometimes I am climbing for 15 miles. Also, my short climb is 6.5% grade and 4.5 miles and I only average 8 MPH on that!

I'm right in the middle there. I think I average around 8 mph to Clear Creak, then it drops to 7 for some of the sections heading up to Red Box. I still don't pass many people on the way up that road, and many people pass me.

Are you sure? She doesn't like to start her rides before 10am, even in 90-100 degree heat! I like to finish most of my climbing before high noon.

Interesting thread. In a local stage race, the winning local pro/cat 1 will finish the opening hill (3.5km) climb stage, a consistent 8% with 400m at 12%, in 9 minutes. Average speed is 23km/hr or 11mph. On the same climb, I can manage 16 or 17km/hr or 8mph. However, it is difficult to compare one climb to another since very few climbs, atleast in my experience, are consistently one grade from the bottom to the top. For instance, on another climb (8km), I can average 22km/hr. The sign beside the road states it is 8% but the climb includes sections that are 6, 7 and 9 percent.
