How do you judge a cyclist?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I wish manufacturers would print the brand-name on the down tube a little bigger so that I can read it better, and judge more effectively, when passing at high speed.
My judging procedure is immediate, harsh, and satisfying.
lol.

I think umd is one of the good guys here. If he is judging someone here it's not for some superficial reason, at least not from what I've seen. He is also quick to admit when he is wrong or mistaken. All that road nazi stuff is just in good fun. Ask Pcad.

I never said I wasn't judgemental at all, just that I don't judge other cyclists in the context of the question. Honestly, when I'm out riding, my safety comes first, and my workout or pleasure of the ride or company comes next. Caring, even remotely, about what others are riding is so far down this list of things that go through my mind as to be practically insignificant. Anyway, I challenge you to go through my 4,000 posts on bikeforums and give a % that are judgemental. I'm sure there are plenty, but as a ratio, I doubt it is significant. If you find that more than 5% are unfairly judgemental, I will publicly apologize.

Edit: as an example, see this thread, where a guy posted a very long winded ramble with a question buried somewhere deep inside, that I wanted to help with but was having trouble seeing. I couldn't get past the consistent mis-spelling of "rode". By itself, that would not have been a big deal, but I was straining to understand the basic premise of the post as it was and that was the straw that broke the camel's back, as it were. He edited his post with the question more clearly presented, and then got many useful replies, myself included.

In the event that someone actually passes me, I immediately jump on their wheel. Recovery rides excepted.

I prefer to judge based on how easily I catch up to the other cyclist, or how easily they ride off and leave me struggling up the hill at 7 mph, as is more often the case.

Relax!!!!!!! You are either judgemental or not (the or not is purely theoretical). Any % is significant as it proves that you judge. The % only reflects the % of times you had something witty/fun/helpful to say about your judgement. Dont worry you have Big John fooled.

What makes you think I'm not relaxed? Again, I never said I wasn't judgemental at all, just that I don't judge other cyclists on the road. I'm too absorbed in my own activity to care. But what else am I going to do on bikeforums except poke fun at the morons?

Was riding north up Topanga Canyon this morning, heading home after my regular climb loop. Weather could not have been more perfect in the mid 70's, with a coastal fog on it's last legs. 2 miles from home I had to stop because of some road work being done. Alongside me pulls up a tall freak of a guy with a face covered in red and green tatoos, red kit, tan, smooth legs and arms, and a bike that was the most awesome machine I've seen in a long time. Don't know it's make because it only had a website URL on it's downtube. Every part on it reeked of perfection. We nod to one another and he looks down at my mostly black with red trim Moto SL. I think, "Here comes the judgement."
We're sitting there side by side for awhile and I say, "If only the temps were like this all the time. Couldn't be more perfect." He agrees and goes, "Yep. Only 5 more months of this."
I'm thinking that was some very dry humor on his part about our near perfect year round weather.
He looks down at my ride again and asks, "Didn't you race at (enter name of regional race I forget) last weekend?" I think he's F-ing with me. I say, "Wasn't me."
He asks, "You live around here?" "Yeah, about 2 miles up the road, which means anywhere I go involves a climb. Load me up with gears and off I go." He nods.
Seconds go by and I say, "Just keepin the fat off... and from the looks of it, you need to take some fat off as well." He looks down at his Rasmussenesque body, grins and says, "Yeah, I know."
Then we get the OK to roll and he flies off. Nice guy.

Your to absorbed in my own activity. I dont know what this means but I assume it means you are riding balls to the wall every ride. Even when I am riding as hard as I can I am making judgements about the riders around me such as:

"If I had joe's bike and wheels he would be behind me and I would be in front of him"
"This guy is a F%#k Up passing me like that, I'm just going to waste him after the turn around"

Making judgement about the riders while I am killing myself helps me forget about the pain and makes me ride harder because some of the judgements I am making are for motivational purposes. If you say one more time that you "dont judge cyclist on the road" I am going to start to lose all respect for you.

The one that you happen to be on when you're riding faster than everyone else. It's like cars. Rice rockets come across as arrogant. If you have a nicer, expensive sports car (corvette as an example) people like your car, but assume you're a sissy if it isn't raced (mass generalization here). If you have a sleeper, they'll only look at you funny until you blow them away.

So if I ride an Iron Horse Cyclone with a basic Sora group - then I'm judged WAY HARSH by some folks!?!?!? ;+ )

That's okay. I can still keep up with my wife, and that's all that matters. And, since I'm 60, I really don't care what others think anyways. In fact, how many would judge me if I told you that most of the time (when it's really hot weather) I wear those loose mountain bike type shorts (the ones with the padded spandex inserts) because they're way cooler than the tight fitting road shorts.

Oh - and I also have one of those little rear view mirrors that attaches to my bike helmet, too. Now - how many of you want to go on a group ride with me?

Bottom line - it's ALL about the riding. We do it cause we love it, not to impress someone else.

I think the difference between you and me, is that I don't care if you respect me. I respect myself and that is enough. I've already said that my primary concern when I'm riding is my safety. That's what I mean by "absorbed in my own activity". If I had the thoughts go through my head while riding that you appear to have, I would hate doing it. I save my judgements for the asshats in the cars that try to run me off the road.

In order to appreciate you need to make a judgement. It is frustrating how many people dont think they are judgemental. Come to terms with it people, it is the first step to being an honest person.

I judge every cyclist I see...

Then wave and say good day...

As I am thinking, how glad I am that they too are riding...

There is such a thing as the context of the question. I am not claiming that I make no judgments in life or cycling. I am claiming that I don't give a crap what bike someone is riding. Why is that so hard to understand?

Hmm this makes me curious.

How would you judge a guy riding a Trek 5200 in just PT shorts and a teeshirt with tennis shoes, but clipless pedals?

You like the shaved legs look? I wasn't sure if women actually appreciated that. Do non-cyclist women appreciate that?
