Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

note to myself:

I may shave my legs again or may not.

i have shaved my legs for 30 + years ever since i started riding way back in the late 70's. In September I had a crash and couldn't cycle for about 5 weeks. Brusied all my right side ribs and seperated my shoulder. but anyway back to riding it really makes no difference rather you shave or not. The 'pro's do it so we more or less emmulate them on what they do. the biggest asset in shaving your legs inmo is when you crash and get road rash it is far easier to clean, scrub the crap out of that area. Otherwise their is really no significant gain or savings inmo other than narcissism

Don't forget the boys downstairs. If you're strong enough like Lance, you can get away with removing only one

One kidney, tonsils, and gall bladder should also go. I've also found you can remove a good amount of intestine as well.

Don't forget to shave the paint off the frame and the decals off the tires.

1) Some women cyclists told me I needed to get rid of the "poof": that poof of hair that comes up at the edge of the lycra shorts.
2) It makes dealing with sunscreen much easier. I haven't used embro but am sure that is the same.
3) why not?

When I was a teenager in the mid-80's I shaved to the surprise of my friends (plus I had just gotten into Breaking Away). Tried waxing and looked like a plucked chicken for a week! I wonder what my wife would say if I did it now

I don't like the feel of wind against my leg hair. Shaving makes it feel like your legs are spinning in a vacuum, which is kind of a neat feeling. On the other hand, I don't like shaving either. So, if I am showing leg skin when I ride, I shave. If not, I don't. I tend not to shave much in winter.

Also, I do shave once in a while even if my legs are covered simply because leg hair coming out through lycra is a bit unattractive. So in the winter I shave just often enough to keep the leg hair in check. It amounts to once a month or so. In the summer, once a week or before big races/rides, whichever is sooner.

Pfff. Shaving? Plucking? Nah. Chemo's the way to do it! Not a single hair anywhere on your body and no razor burn, nicks, bleeding, nothin! Now THAT's commitment! Granted you look like a complete poser while riding because it makes you really slow, but other than the pasty green skin color, you'll look hard-core when off the bike!

I always teased people that shaved. Then I got into cycling and I gave it a try. Once I did it, I hated the look of my legs covered in hair. Plus, my wife prefers my legs smooth like this.

I've shaved my legs for so long now it really squicks me out to have them get too scraggly. Feels weird.

I had quite thin hair on my legs before shaving them, they were quite "chicken like" before taking up road biking.
Where does this "leg flab" you speak of come from?

It comes from me eating too much, and riding too little

Doesn't matter what others think. It only matters what it feels like when you rub your legs on that other person's legs. Which way do you like it better? Which way do they like it better? Yumm. There's a local cycling club with a motto: "Where the men shave their legs and the women don't."

fortunately for me my leg hair is very sparse and very thin (much more on my arms and they are still fairly sparse as well), not to mention being light colored making it even more difficult to see, without being up close to me most people could barely tell if I shaved or not, so why bother. I mentioned trying it to my wife, she said "no, don't" so I use that extra shave time to shave my beard properly with old school badger brush/soap and a double edge razor.

This is a new and exciting topic.

Wait, no it's not.

Merging this with the last large shaving thread.

I never understood the urge to suppress an individual's personal curiosity and specific questions about a subject just because we already had a large thread about the topic five years ago. Why not just put a link to the last thread and let people have a go at the new one?

Do this too much and you end up like fixedgearfever. Dead, because every topic is already discussed once and the forum elders decide it can never be discussed ever again, even though new thoughts might just pop up every five years or so with, you know, new people involved and all. This ain't a library, it's a discussion forum, meaning if it's going to be worth its network storage space, people gotta be discussing stuff. Even if it's a little mundane and people once talked about it several years ago.

I would encourage discussions even if they have been done before. Linking does not make sense.
