Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So I Got a System-Six 4...WTH Was I Thinking?

$2,600 with taxes (goddamn Cook County; Stroger can go fly a kite as far as I'm concerned).

Anyway, I'm still in this trial period with the bike where I can return it as long as it isn't damaged (used tires are obviously ok). Sp I'm getting anxious...

Thing is, I'm a beginner really, been off the bike a long time, I have a CAAD 2 R300 frame in the garage and an almost full Dura-Ace 7402 groupset (no wheels). I can use a Paul Thumbie for the f. derailleur and a bar-end for the r. derailleur and boom, instant bike.

I'm also concerned if I crash, I'll basically destroy a carbon bike (and I won't be able to get a replacement if they aren't MAKING THEM ANYMORE!). This is my largest concern; I'm a clumsy idiot! Clumsy+carbon=disaster?

Am I just getting buyer's remorse or was I just sorta being enamored with SRAM Rival (I <3 it) and System-Six and being stupid by buying it. I mean I WANT to race next year, it's a goal, but I have a thread in the training forum that goes over whether or not I can actually race (bad knee's and I'm only 22).

I don't think I'd ever get near $2,600 if I sold it via EBay a year later; even if it's "rare".

So many random thoughts...I have a shrink appt. at 12:45 about my anxiety getting worse and Klonopin doing jack; can you tell?

EDIT: If the rumors are true, I could just buy an '09 CAAD 9/10 with a BB30 if I want a bit!

If I had an old bike that fit I probably wouldn't look to get a new one unless I wanted a bike in a new frame material. So long as you didn't break the bank with this purchase just go out and enjoy it with no worries about crashing because if you do you'll make it a self fulfilling prophesy.

If it fits, keep riding it.

The bike is new, so there are no warranty issues if it breaks.

You can't get a BB30 CAAD 9 unless you ride for a Cannondale sponsored trade team or shop team/club.

I've taken 15mg of Klonopin and it has just made me feel slightly drowsy and it makes me clumsier; that's it. A friend has a prescription for it, takes 2, zonks for 24 hours.

I dunno what is wrong with my body. It's pretty f'd up in general (kidney transplant and damage from a failed one) but the only thing I can think of is that maybe it's my painkiller tolerance that makes Klonopin virtually useless? But they're different chemicals and work differently...But what the hell do I know.

As for the bike, I've been paying my parents 8k rent so far since I've been 18. They do it out of principle and still let me use the money from time to time. That's where I got the money from.

If 15mg of Klonopin doesn't lay you out like a rug, you likely have more than just anxiety going on...and no bike is gonna cause it. Visiting the MD is a good idea.

-Gotten the worst strain of peritonitus my doctors have ever seen and almost died
-Flat-lined during the first transplant surgery

-Did dialysis for 4.5 years, 4 of them waiting for someone to die so *I* could live.
-Second transplant is working for 4 years this month on the 11th. It has tried to fail twice a year each year I've had it.
-During my "Make a Wish" trip, which was fly-fishing in Colorado, I got a strain of a disease they STILL haven't identified and almost died. By piss and crap was black
-I take toxic/steroid pills to keep the kidney from rejecting; they give me horrible acne, make me throw-up every morning and they're actually killing the kidney, just SLOWER than not having them.

-Now I have knee problems; probably from the lack of calcium during my growing years. My legs are "knock-knee'd" (bend inward), also from calcium deficiency

Klonopin is basically time released Valium, not a pain killer.

Go to your lbs and find a CAAD 9 and tap on the top tube with your fingernails. It's not much studier than the carbon tubes on the system six if it is any studier. Turn that old bike into a working bike and make it your rain bike. Ride more.

Maybe try a holistic approach.
Diet, herbs, yoga, acupuncture, etc.
If the Western medicine thing isn't working, maybe it's time to look at something else.
Sorry if I was snide in my previous post. I didn't know you had such a challenging history. I thought it was just another BF whiner's story.
Good luck with your health.

Just enjoy the bike. Crashes happen, but the ones that take out a frame are rare. If the bike fits ride it like you stole it.

Keep the new bike, if you crash hard enough to break the carbon frame chances are the aluminum frame will be destroyed as well. And if you happen to break it and they aren't making the system 6 anymore, they will replace it will a comparable model.

Good luck with your helth issues.

can't tell if that was a joke, or if Rad just didn't read the post a few up.

Anyway, if the new bike makes you want to ride -- then keep it. If you feel like you wasted your money, then take it back.

FWIW, I've wrecked my carbon bike twice (!) now in crits, and it's still fine. Also, because they won't make that frame anymore, if you break it -- you can get the "6", which would be an upgrade, as a warranty replacement.

A lesson in buyer's remorse: if you have buyer's remorse and have an opportunity to return the item, even at a small loss to yourself, go ahead and take that opportunity. This way, if you want to buy it again, you at least have a chance to think it over.

Thanks for (some) of the replies.

Basically, I'm just worried I bought an expensive bike that I won't be able to ride next year because of my knee's. But I'm seeing my knee/sports-medicine guy on thursday so I'll just wait until then.

Paul Kozy is giving me until the 15th to return the bike; that guy is alright. If you live in Chicago or in the surburbs, check out one of their FIVE stores the guy started. It has a better LBS feel than my own LBS down the street!
BTW it rides very smoothly, but I'm used to only riding older alu Cannondales. It tracks well and I definately can feel a difference my arms/hands because they don't get as tired/sore like they used to (Carbon front triangle the cause?). I've only gotten it up to speed on empty smooth roads because it's basically on a loan situation and I want to keep the bike intact and as original as possible. Only differences are I added lights and Keo Classics. It comes stock with an cheapo version of the Arione saddle and it is not comfortable. If my Aliante I haven't used in a long while doesn't do the trick, I'll get a Toupe as per the recommendation of every single Kozy employee. Their eyes would glisten when they talked about that saddle...'twas creepy.

BTW this is what it looks like...

Better fit is likely the cause of the not-as-sore upper extremities.
