Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Trainer: Which to buy?

Guys,

I'm looking to buy a trainer. Problem is, I live in an apartment, so it has to be quiet. From my understanding, some of these can be loud as hell and some are nearly silent.

Can someone give me a recommendation on a quality trainer that's really quiet?

If you want quiet, the Blackburn Trackstand Ultra is the quietest out there. I've had one for a couple years now, used it in an apartment for a while and it was quiet enough that the only noise I heard was my drivetrain.

Any fluid trainer is going to be loud. Wind trainers are even louder.

Rollers on their on are medium-quiet, if you get Kreitlers with the Killer Headwind resistance unit they're incredibly loud.

My Kurt is quieter than my old Cycleops Fluid2, and my rollers are loudest of the three.

My Elite Fuid trainer is rather quiet, likely due to the gel widget under the tire piece. In any case, setting the unit on a rubber mat or such that it doesn't resonate through the floor makes a huge difference.

You should buy mine! I bought a brand new CycleOps Fluid 2 this past Winter and used it for 2 hours total.
It is NEW! I paid about $300 bucks and will sell it for $200+shipping. I'm near NYC. It is in the box, with all accessories, it's NEW!

thanks, renato

The CycleOps Fluid2 is louder than the 1up, Blackburn Trackstand Ultra, and rollers. I've used all the devices mentioned in this post.

I have a Kurt Kinetic and I wouldn't exactly call it quiet. Better than many others, but it still makes some noise when you get going...

But avoid the Blackburn Trackstand Mag and Fluid Trainers! They are hideously loud and the tensioner knob on the Fluid trainer loosened up 2-3 times within a 30 min period due to high vibration. Very annoying!

Don't confuse these with the higher end Elite trainer.

The 1Up was pretty nice and quiet enough for an apartment. But you may want to get a rug or rubber mat to help abosrb a little more of the vibration no matter what trainer you get if you have wooden floors.

Good luck!

My Tacx Flow (2008) is quiet; 2008 model (the soft roller is wrapped in steel) is supposedly much quieter than prior years. It was the best purchase I made this winter, as I was only able to get outside 2-3 times during Jan/Feb. It has a power meter and 14-level variable resistance. You can get DVDs that slow you the rode and tell you what resistance setting matches the road. This makes longer trainer session palatable.

Decent. Not the best, but lower than MSRP.

I have a Kurt Kinetic Rock and Roll and a Cycleops. The Kurt Kinetic has a very smooth resistance unit which I like. I don't think I really like the Rock and Roll portion of the trainer. It's big and heavy which is an issue for me since I set it up and take it down for each trainer season. Also it leans to the side, so I'm on a trainer always leaning left. I'm trying a few things from Kurt Kinetics to fix the leaning problem right now. I get the impressions that it's a common problem and they don't have a universal fix at this time, but the latest bolts might just fix the problem.
