Can I use a Shimano cassette with SRAM group?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Can I use a Shimano cassette with SRAM group?

Quick compatibility question (search results were not definitive) - I have a wheelset with one of those worthless 10 speed only hubs and have learned that SRAM cassettes will not fit. I also prefer Shimano 12/27 gearing. Can I use my ultegra cassette with a SRAM Red group?

Can you elaborate? Considering that SRAM cassettes are wider than Shimano, I wonder if there would be an appreciable loss in shifting performance.

Sram and Shimano use the same spacing width. But they utilize different ratios of cable pull.

Thus Sram and Shimano cassettes, chains, and chainrings are interchangeable. But SRAM brifters need to be paired with SRAM rear deraileurs (particularly rear) And Shimano brifters need to be paired with Shimano rear derailleurs.
