Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Question about Eddy Merckx Bike

I have a Eddy Merckx Alu-Team 20th Anniversary issue bycicle. I acquired this from a friend and I am looking to part with it. I am a mountain biker and know nothing when it comes to pricing on road bikes. First question is what do you guys think of this bike and secondly what would be the asking price for a used one in EXCELLENT shape. Thanks in adavance!

I'm rather insulted that you are implying I stole this. I am a Detective here at the Salisbury Police Department in Salisbury, NC. I take great offense to that statement. I understand that the bike is an expensive bike but without going into detail you wouldn't know how I came to have the bike. Don't make such ignorant statements until you know the facts..... Secondly, it really isn't YOUR business how I got the bike. If you don't want to have anything to do with it or want to comment on what i asked then don't reply. Rather simple...Todd

You realize you are on Bike Forums, right?

Such discretion is very rare amongst BF posters.

I understand that, I also understand that there are many thieves out there. I am willing to give the serial numbers and explain how I got the bike. The bike was a gift to my cousin who doesn't like it. He wants to sell it and asked me to do so, so that the person that gave it to him doesn't have their feelings hurt. He is a mountain biker also and he was trying to get into road biking. Neither of us know that much about the bikes. We both own Gary Fisher's as our mountain bikes so Eddy Merckx is something we know nothing about.

There.

Nothing that whoever can post will tarnish your reputation, as you provided an explanation with reasonable spelling and grammar.

You win. Be happy.

It's worth $900-1200 on eBay, but feel free to sell it to me for $200, which is all I can spare.

That bike is hot. And I want it

That'll fetch around $1200 on Ebay, perhaps more.

Clean it up a bit, and it'll go for a few hundred more, as you'll be able to pass the components off as "well maintained" as opposed to "used".

Campy Record 10 and a Look fork add to what is already a pretty good frameset. Merckx's are desirable and the Campy stuff is very nice (Record is top of the line, in case you're not familiar with the make. It hasn't been on MTBs in a long time).

Aluminum frames are a bit out of favor with the exception of recent vintage or new Cannondales but that bike will find plenty of buyers.

I could guess that it'll sell for over $1000 USD, maybe a good bit over that. Really, the best way to figure out market pricing is to search closed auctions on eBay. Search for similar Merckxs and other aluminum fram bikes with Campagnolo Record 10.

BTW your cousin was gifted a very nice roadbike. I guess you guys really can't get into road biking b/c that bike (if it fits) should have done the trick.

I agree wit the importance of a real thorough cleanup. Also, do a little research on Eddy Merckx (the Wikipedia article is fine) it'll help to know a bit about the man and the marque when it comes time to sell.

Grow some skin. You shouldn't get offended from the post of a stranger on the internet. I was kidding.

A cleanup it is. As far as getitng into road biking.... just wasn't for us. I enjoy not having to dodge cars, I do like dodging trees, but not cars.. I also find that there are less dogs to chase me in the woods than on the road! The bike is for sale, and I will be posting it in the classifieds. I do appreciate the input o nthe bike. My friend, that rides with us, has a LeMond that he rides on the road and loves. He wants my cousin to trade straight up with him but as I stated, he doesn't want a road bike. Either way, thanks again and hopefully you will like the "cleaned" version of the bike!

That's a good looking bike. Let us know if and when you decide to sell it, and for how much.

Nice bike! You might want to include the frame size in the ad. I believe that Merckx measures their frames from the center of the bottom bracket to the center of the seat tube / top tube intersection (in centimeters).

If you indicated the size I missed it. You need to post the frame size such as top tube length, seat tube length, and standover height. Ideally post the size and a link to a chart showing all the key dimensions or list the dimensions like seat tube and head tube angles in addition to the ones above.
