Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My second replacement unit (third in all) takes forever to get a lock. My first replacement unit was lightning fast. Weird, huh?

Here's the deal. garmin wants $99 to fix since it out of warrnaty. My guess is they just send another refurb that will probably have the same problem. So I am debating getting a 705. I saw one here of r $384, seems legit https://www.compuplus.com/i-Garmin-Ed...uy5xm5d20480s0.

Anyway, I am going to try and fix this thing myself. I found these pics of one being fixed online. Here is the link.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I have noticed that if you make sure that if you have the zip ties on EXTREMELY tight to the stem, the problem occurs less. Its really not a big deal for training rides, but since I am a numbers kind of person, I find it really annoying when it happens during a race.

Project failed, took it apart and tried to solder it. Probably ended up frying it since it no longer powers on. Now debating the 705 or getting a replacement.

Mine is on tight, but I've only had it for 3 months, so I'm not looking forward to the issues described in this thread.

I've never had that problem between 2 units and 20,000 miles. It is a common problem, but it is not inevitable. I'd say about 20% of the people I know when them end up with the problem.

Once again...If you wrap the unit with two rubber bands, one near the top and one near the bottom, it fixes the problem. I do have a problem with environmental stress cracking on one of my rubber bands though.

I had this problem with rechargeables. Switched to Alkaline batteries and the problem went away. Seems that there is a minor size difference between the two.

i think you are confused. the Edge 305 uses a rechargeable lithium-ion and the unit is factory sealed. it is not meant to be opened or replaced on the consumer end. later.

I had this problem on every ride until I realized I didn't install the rubber piece that comes with it. Once I installed that under the unit on the stem I have not had it turn off once. And I have been on some pretty bad roads since then. If it does happen again, I will probably cut the rubber piece in half and place both sections underneath to provide more cushion.

Also, rather than solder and hardwire the battery which was mentioned in a previous link, you can remove the two little screws and re-install them with little rubber o-rings. Use the o-rings like washers and it provide a better connection.

After three years, I just started having this problem. Garmin Support had me ship my unit back and they sent me a replacement in just over one week. No charge. That's pretty outstanding service.

great news. I've been having this problem for a while (read: over a year) but haven't wanted to be without it, so I haven't sent it in yet. guess I should do it now while they're still willing to replace it...
