Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I keep trying to convince my wife to be my sugar mamma so I can quit my job, but apparently I'm not THAT cute.

Of course. Why else would one marry?

I mean, she's not rich - she works, but makes decent money. She gives me an "allowance" - not a lot ($2k/month) but I don't have any expenses beyond riding and such.

From here on out, you'll be known as "The Most Blessed Woo".

You need nothing more than a heavy cruiser bike and time to do hill repeats. Ala Davis Phinney in the '80's.

Money does solve problems. Especially if your problem is not having money.

EPO is pretty expensive. Luckily the government paid for mine when I had to be on it for something. Other than that, if you were honest, you would have to tell your wife that riding and climbing is free. Nothing else, and certainly no particular bike or anything on it will make you a better rider.

It's not all it's cracked up to be. I've been "retired" almost 5 years now (I'm 45); it can be kinda dull. I don't really love riding like most of you seem to - I really do it more because I have to do something for exercise, so an hour or an hour and a half a day is about it. The rest of the time I just lay around the house waiting for the Mrs. to come home and shag me. As soon as she finishes she always says "now you can go back out and ride", but I usually don't want to.

Maybe I should just go back to work.

Yes. If you can't figure out how to enjoy yourself, you should go back to work. Digging ditches would be good for you.

Let me give you some hints: Bicycles, cars....fast cars, boats, jetskis, airplanes, travel, motorcycles, women.

If that fails, there is always hookers and blow.

I worked with a guy that sold a company for $20,000,000 (yes, 20 million). This DORK worked 10 hour days in a cubicle. I wanted to smack him every time I saw him.

Chuckles, between this and your medical concerns, I don't envy you one bit. Have you considered being an alcoholic?

If you have plenty of time and good equipment (which you darn well better have if you get $2k per month) just lack the motivation to get out and ride more...you're just a whining wussy if you sit around complaining about not being better.

Some have plenty of time, but no motivation.
Some have plenty of motivation, but no time.
Some have plenty of money, but no time.
Some have time and motivation, but no money.
Some happen to have all three.

The last two are the ones to be afraid of....It's not about money (beyond the bare necessities), but about time and motivation. If you have it, you have it....if you don't...stop complaining about not being better. The guys who are dropping you are likely spending LOTS more time in the saddle than you are. The REALLY fast ones are doing more than simply riding, but specifically training, which I doubt is very "fun." They're putting their time in for the opportunity to make you feel bad, and it seems to be paying off.

I figure an on call masseuse would be good. That aside, however much money it takes for her to always be just in front of you on a bike. That should provide sufficient motivation to keep you working hard.

That's a huge amount of discretionary cash at your disposal. She needs another husband to spread the wealth around a bit. I'll volunteer for that role (but I need my wife's permission first).
