I've always been told to jog against traffic, ride with it. So they are running the right direction, but if it were me and a cyclist was coming, just take a big step right or whatever and share the road if the surface conditions are that much better on the bicycle lane.
Or just aim right at them and hold your line. Keeps you from hitting the jogger, squirrel, etc. when they move.

Is it common etiquette (or safety practice) for joggers to run against traffic in the bike lane of a major road?
I have never noticed this until a few months ago. But now it seems that, at least once a week, I am dodging inbound bike-lane joggers on the main road just outside of my neighborhood. And this is a road that has nice, level, clean sidewalks. What are these clowns doing?

As someone that likes to run, people that run against traffic on the bike path are correct. Sidewalks are normally made of concrete which SUCKS to run on. There is no give at all from concrete and you will develop serious medical problems if you run on concrete all the time. Running against traffic lets you dodge cars easier. When I run, I'll usually hug the right side(curb) when I see a cyclist coming my way. If they start charging me, I pull out my glock and blast them in the knees. Stupid cyclists. LOL

i pull a .45 out of my jersey pocket and cock it with my teeth and point it at the ground. they tend to stop and wait on the curve, or they will hide behind a tree.

Around here, Pedestrian traffic is directed to be facing traffic. We even have signs to that affect. Personally, I'd rather they see me coming than to be totally ignorant to the fact I will be overtaking them.
I went through this at Duck this year. The Jogging/Bike path was only on one side of the road. So both biking and jogging went in both directions. Sometimes when I would give a courtesy ding on the bell and announce I was on their left, they would turn around and almost step right into me. People coming towards me did not cause a problem.
I had one lady/husband with a stroller in front of me. I tried to announce I was there, but the baby needed attention, and they turned the stroller 90 degrees across the path, sending me into the street. I darn near crapped my pants.
Then I had three teens, maybe 20’s, coming at me. They see me and got three abreast and covered the path completey just to force me off. I had room to the side and call them the “A” word. They stopped and turned around. I unclipped and stopped, got off the side of the bike and said “you don’t even want to start this”, they turned and walked briskly away. The three of them maybe/maybe not could have taken me, but I had enough adrenaline to give it one heck of a go.
I deal with A-Holes every night here when I ride. Usually motorist. Usually they will look me right in the eye at a stop sign, and then pull out in front of me.
My wife asked if I EVER have a ride where I don't get PO'd at someone. I told here it is rare.

Yeah, I actually prefer that they're running against traffic, so we can get some eye contact going.
It only bugs me when they don't share the space, which is rare.
Regarding moms with strollers, they often can't take them on the sidewalk, depending on other foot traffic and overgrown shrubbery.

poor or cheap road design = people using what they want even if marked otherwise.
honestly I wouldn't want to push around a stroller or jog in gravel paths either when there's a paved path right next to it.

One reason has to do with being able to predict their movements and act accordingly.
I expect anybody facing away from me to be moving with the flow of traffic (cars, bikes, and peds), espcially in the street. I expect them to be to the right side of their lane, and will pass them on the left.
If I see that they're facing towards me, I assume they're coming towards me and I when I pass them, they'll go by on my left.
It can be confusing when they mix up the standard rules of the road, and things can happen very fast sometimes. It's safer to follow the standard conventions because it helps us all know what to expect. The unexpected causes accidents.
If you rarely run around other people it doesn't really matter, IMO. However, we get this all the time around here, on the road and the bike paths.

I run, and one of my routes its in a bike lane against traffic. Sidewalks are not only hard, but around here uneven, and littered with people walking dogs, kids riding bikes, etc etc....and last year when i detoured onto the grass to make a pass i rolled my ankle because the ground had a dip (hidden by the grass).
When i run on the road, I make eye contact (sometimes even *gasp* give a small nod!) and move to my left, leaving plenty of space for the cyclists to pass without leaving the bike lane.
Seriously, why is this a big deal? If you really hate it, just look over your shoulder and move to your left a tad to pass. This is about as hard to do as it is for a car to pass a cyclist....you know....the other thing we ***** about on here.

Single runners can make some room for me. I can make some room for the strollers, and so can you.
WTF are you doing on a MUP?

Do you think MUPs are designed for road cyclists or "blonde bimbo wannabee joggers" trying to get some exercise with their children? Double wide strollers aren't that wide anyway. Where would you rather these women be? Getting fatter at home while watching TV? Trying to run against traffic with their children while dodging stupid roadies and stupid cagers? Trying to run with traffic getting yelled at by stupid roadies? Seriously wtf dude?

No, the strollers just don't fit. I'm all for moms getting out for some exercise. It beats sitting at home, eating cheetos and letting the kids play on the wii all day.

Yeah
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...just-fine.html
The guy who i replied this to has, as i thought, admitted he was joking, but yeah it's true.
Strange when it's a cyclist that's to blame for the death of someone else.
Think everyone's got to be extremely viligant, aware and 'forgiving' on roads and paths
