Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I like the colors but I'm glad I bought my 5.1. I couldn't even get me a 4.5 at MSRP right now for what I spent on the 5.1 last month.

I actually like the colors, but why is the price jump from a 4.7 to a 5.2 over $1300? They have basically the same drivetrain. Is the OCLV carbon that much better?

Nice jump in prices! Ouch!

Don't mind the colors, but liked last years better.

Sticking with Orbea

Now there are two levels of Project One. Now known as Project One and Project One Signature Series.

You will now be able to customize your colors at no charge and have it shipped from the factory in about 7 days. 6 Series ordering started today, with 5 Series bikes in mid-October.

Here are the free options:

All non-Signature-series paint options (literally dozens of permutations)
• All component color or size options at same model level
o Color Options: Bar Tape, Housing, Tires, Wheels, Saddles, Stems
o Size Options: Bar Width, Stem Length, Crank Length
• Gearing options
o Double or Compact (Triple is slight up-charge)
o Cassette size

Yes, if you want flames or fighter jets or lightning or whatever on your Madone, you go Signature Series and pay $300-400 and wait a month, but this new thing is the cat's pajamas.

Have it your way....
Yeah, you beat me to it. The rep was in a couple of weeks ago talking about this. Great idea.

Yes.

Last year the 4.5 was about $1,800 and the 5.2 was about $3,200.

I'm sure they are very good bikes to ride but I don't like the colors. I think it's too flashy...it has that "hey look at me, I am a racer" look. But thats just my opinion.

Hi...

There never was a 5.0 Madone.

The 5.1, which was the white frame did not last long and was dropped some time ago.

The prices on the site are MSRP. Unless you are an idiot, you don't charge MSRP. Figure on $3,700 to $3,800 for the 5.2. Sompelace in there. That's in line with similar bikes, both price and increase-wise.

Sheesh...

Just bought the last 08 Madone 5.2 and it is everything it should be. Got it a LOT less than the new 09s.

However, I am impressed with the colors. If those who call the Trek ugly would just visit all the other manufacturers, Colnago, Cervelo, Stork, Pinny, etc. they will see that the industry has shifted to the very same colors. So, if you don't like the Trek colors, you won't like theirs either...they are basically the SAME.

Anywho...beauty is in the eye of the beholder. BTW, the frames have NOT changed.

Would I buy a new 5.2 for $4100 when I just bought new for $3200? Ummmmm....no, I would buy a Colnago CLX in the same color, only because the Colnago has always been a dream of mine. If I stayed with the Trek, I would probably be happy with a 4.? or whatever that is less than $3k. But, I have my 5.2 so that decision will never have to be made.

I like the Trek Madone a lot except for the hideous design of the seat mast. In principle it is a fine idea. In reality it zero relationship with the seat tube. It is exceeding crude in design. Trek tries to camouflage its ugliness by greeking it out with black paint. Other than that it a fine design and a wonderfully performing bike. Trek customer Service is superb.

Once more...

The price on Trek's website is MSRP. Nobody but a fool charges MSRP.

If you were going to buy an '09 it would be about $500ish more than the '08.

Same as Colnago. And half the price is not the paint. And the Trek comes with a lifetime warranty against manufacturer's defects, versus the Colnago two year warranty.

I sold a Madone to a guy with a seven year old Colnago that split the head tube. He called them and they told him to eat s*** and die. The frame is now hanging in our service area to point that issue out to people that are considering them.

So run right out and get one.

Yep. You are no longer stuck with stock! And you can make it look different for free in about a week.

And yes, they are totally worth it. This opinion is brought to you by a diehard steel-loving Waterford fan. Don't dismiss them out of hand until you've had some saddle time. The seatmast wasn't engineered to look cute-it is there for a specific function. The form happens to follow it. It makes for the most comfortable bike I've ever ridden.

Colnago generally doesn't need the warranty. Their stuff just doesn't break very often.

Except the E1's, those rigs has issues.

Trek "US made" Madones rule! Some people gravitate toward smaller or obscure builders and away from large company built bikes. Fact is: Trek has more carbon engineers on the payroll than most bike companies have employees. Everyone has an opinion...this is mine!
