Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

saddle height and speed

I knew my saddle was too low, so yesterday I finally raised the height by 1cm. I never really had any pain, so I didn’t expect much of a difference. To my surprise, I upped my average speed by 2 mph. I was able to keep a significantly higher cadence than normal without trouble.

I’ve tried to think of an explanation, but I didn’t eat anything different, there was very little wind, and I was riding a route I’ve done dozens of times before.

Could my saddle height really have caused this????

Not unless it was exceptionally low. Typically ease of spinning and cadence is improved by lowering the saddle. If it feels good and you are faster, ride the wave.

You put it higher, but you didn't say anything about fore-and-aft. That changes a bit when you change the saddle height. It might be only millimeters, but I know that for me, that makes a big difference- like being set up for sprinting or time trialing vs climbing or just long distance cruising when a person wants to emphasize one. Both height and fore-and-aft could certainly make a difference in the power you can put down and the speed you can sustain if the change was big enough. Too low a saddle really has me huffing and puffing pretty quickly..

Whatever you do don't raise it 10cm or you could be going faster then the speed of sound.
