Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help a newbie with derailleur hanger break

Hi everyone,

So I just started cycling and I had a derailleur hanger (just learned what its called today!) snap.

Sooo........

I want to replace it myself to save $. I am a handy guy, worked in construction/auto, have changed brake pads/carburators, etc.

I thought it would be an easy switcheroo, but then I see all these websites about proper fitting and I freaked out!

Is it really that hard? Do I need a professional to do it????

ANY help appreciated! Even good websites to buy the piece or even good sites that describe how to change it properly.

Thanks, looking forward to getting to know you guys on here!

Will

it's really easy to fix with your mechanical skills.

Did it actually break in half? Or did it just bend? Mine bent and I just used a hammer to flatten it out.

when I bent my steel hangar, I just used a 10in monkey wrench and my eye.

But that's if you bend it and if it's made of steel. Aluminum hangars that are replaceable should be replaced if you've bent it or broken it since it will break off at the most inopportune moments.

It's a piece of cake, especially compared to setting up a Qjet.
