Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A quick dumb question

When drafting, where do you look? Do you keep your eye on the back wheel of the guy in front of you or do you focus on some other point?

I watch the shoulders of the guy in front of me, as well as the guys 2 or 3 in front of me if possible.

I look as far ahead as I can, then I look down line and I never, ever, EVER fix on the guy in front of me. I don't look behind as that can cause me to swerve.

What if the guy in front is the only guy in front of you? I don't ride with people too often. But recently, on my commute I've been running into this guy who likes to take turns drafting.

I keep my eyes closed. Cycling can be quite frightening.

Bikes: Yeah, I got a few.

Over the shoulder of the guy in front of me, as best I can - though of course always keeping a sense of how close that shoulder is.

Your focus shoould be past the hips of the rider in front of you, looking up the road. You should keep the rider's wheel in your peripheral vision.

Bikes: Lots. Chapter2, Van Dessel, Giant, Trek, etc Dealers for BMC, Chapter2

Keep your eye on the flow of the group. Whatever it takes to do that.

After a while you will begin to drive the same way you draft...not looking at brake lights, rather at the speed differences between the cars....

.....oh and you'll tailgate everyone.

Always try and look as far ahead as possible whether your in front or in the back. Often in a cross wind you'll find yourself off to the side a little so it is easier to look ahead.

Depending on the size of the guy in front of me, I either look over his shoulders or under his armpit.

Depending on the size of the gal in front of me, I either look straight at her ass, or anywhere else.

Don't stare at the wheel! You'll get hypnotized!

[Sunday morning's race I was in a three man chase group for 10 miles and I was so damned tired that I had to remind myself to keep my head up and actually look down the road. I didn't want to be the guy that took out 2 other guys in the middle of a flat, open road. ]
