Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2009 Specialized Allez Elite

Does anyone know when the new 2009 Specialized Allez Elite will start showing up in bike shops? I have a hybrid bike and would like to get this as my first road bike. Are there other bikes I should consider? I also like the new Trek 2.1. Any suggestions?

Probably sometime this month for the Allez.

I have the 2008 Trek 2.1 and I absolutely love it. No regrets.

I believe my wife just bought a 09 dolce elite, which I assumed would have come out along side the allez? However, she's not here to ask and it's dark outside... hmm maybe no one will notice a large man riding a pink bike...

2008 Allez, couldn't be happier.

I'm pretty damn sure that they had the 09 elite, but I wasn't trying to spend $400 more than I had to.

I've ridden both, the Trek was a much better fit for me and I thought the ride was appreciably nicer as well. That said, the Allez did feel very tight and nimble - just harsher than I'd want.

As it played out, I ended up stretching my budget and buying a Fuji Team Pro - much better bang for the buck than the Trek, and I'd say the ride was about equal. I'd also been considering a Cannondale Synapse 5, but the frame was a bit small, and by the time I was going out to give it another test ride, REI had sold the last one they had. I just took my Fuji for a shakedown ride today and loved every minute of it.

Jshod, if you are willing to stretch your budget a bit, you might go try the Fuji Team (not Pro) if there's a Performance Bikes in your area. They're closing out the '08s, and it's a full carbon bike with 105 components (+ Ultegra rear derailleur). I think it ends up being around $1,300 after discounts.

Then go with the Trek. The most important part is going to be your fit on the bike and if it doesn't feel right when you buy it, it never will. I was in the same situation as you. I rode a Giant, Specialized Allez Elite (08 and 09), Cannondale CAAD9, and others but the Trek felt the best to me so I bought it. I haven't had any regrets and other than the saddle it has been a great bike. PM me if you want to see some pics and let me know if you have any other questions!
