Heartburn while riding?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Heartburn while riding?

Admittedly, I have only been back on the bike about 2 weeks now But I am noticing that I am getting some really nasty heartburn while riding. Has enyone else experienced this? any comments?

I get really bad acid reflux sometimes. I used to get it frequently a few years ago. Part of it was that I was out of shape. Now that I'm (slightly) more fit, I still get it from time to time. I find that it occurs mostly when I ride too hard out of the gate. Are you warming up properly?

Heartburn on a ride indicates cardiac condition

See your cardiologist for a stress test. (You'll be asked to run on a treadmill while hooked up to a harmless EKG machine.) In women, heartburn during exercise can be the only indicating factor for a ticker in need of TLC.

+1 Gatorade is nasty stuff and give me reflux.

Also, work your core muscles so that you are comfortable in the riding position and it isn't squeezing your stomach. Stick to low acid and buffered foods. I like HEED because it doesn't give me heartburn.

first see your cardiologist and rule out the possibility it's an angina - coronary issue you're experiencing because that could kill you, not your gastroesophageal reflux (well, it could, but it takes decades to develop esoph. cancer)

Abstain from anything sweet/acidic for few hours before the ride.

It's a vague possibility. I've got heart problems and so it's something I watch out for, but even so, my cardiologist wasn't too concerned.

Do you eat Powerbars with Gatorade? What do you eat right before your ride?

And, just before your next ride, take a Zantac and monitor how you feel during the ride.

Sometimes theres some sweets before the ride, just depending on what the schedual is for the day, I have to get rides in when I can. I dont eat powerpars or gatorade or use any other manufactured energy crap, I dont believe any of that stuff is any better than a snickers or a potato. Usually on a ride I will have 1 bottle of water and 1 bottle of koolaid. My diet hasnt been to good as of late as I fell of the horse for about a year and indulged in excess of pretty much everything. I do a little drinking, a few whisky and seven ups on the weekend, maybe 1 or 2 during the week.

Well, it could be a diet thing.

Have you gone to the Dr for a physical recently? If you mention heartburn to the Dr, he/she will either prescribe something for you to try for a couple weeks to see if it fixes the problem, or will send you for an test or two to see about ulcers (depending on how painful the heartburn is). If nothing comes up in the tests, and/or if the stuff you take doesn't fix the problem, then you might be sent for an ECG.

But, like I said, you could try taking Zantac before your rides for a week or so and see if that helps. And improving your diet might also help.

Certin Gatoraids will give me heartburn. Lemon/lime does not, go figure. Bananas give me heartburn if I work out hard and so does oatmeal. Weird stuff.
