Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Sunday ride (September 7th, 2008)

Well, I've had a very busy week emotionally, psychologically, and work related. Lots of things going on, so have not been able to ride as much as usual this week. I waned to do a 80-100 mile ride this morning. Not only did I feel physically tired, but I also felt very fatigued mentally from the get go. Ended up with a much shorter ride of 48 miles. Somewhat leisurely too as I just did not have it today. I think I am just going to sit around the pool for a couple of hours and them go and buy myself a new car

How was your sunday ride?

If the sun is out already, what the heck are you doing sitting in front of the computer? Go ride!!!!!

On a positive note, I finally decided to try out the BD carbon wheels I got in the group buy months ago. I had glued new wheels on it and put a new cassette, but never even try them out. I must say that I am impressed, especially for the $388 I ended up paying for them. Weight came in a 1499 gm. Very smooth and very quiet rear hub, which is a marked contrast to my loud as heck PowerTap hub. The only thing negative to these wheels so far is that the valve extensions are rattling a bit. This was noted by several people in the past. I am going to put a bit of black electrical tape on the extensions, and that should take care of it.
GO RIDE ALREADY!!!!

Cloudy, cool, rainy. I don't ride in the rain. Maybe it will clear up later.

You're slackin' Steve...George has been on the road since 5:30.

I'm riding nothing today. I have a house to clean and four kids to keep entertained.

I went out early today with a friend of mine.

I've been in bed parts of the week. Sunday I fell on my hybrid on my way home from the grocery store. It resulted in an injured thigh muscle and a trip to the ER to make sure everything was as ok as possible. Thursday I caught a cold w. fever. Finally starting to feel good, but my legs were rotten today! :-)

Hehe. I meet a ride that starts at 9:15. I leave the house at 8:20 for it. It is a fast 50 mile ride. I'm cutting volume leading up to EC so there really isn't any point to leaving early.

Got to finally try out my new shoes and clipless pedals (my first set) and I'm a believer. Started out on a sweet 24 mph pace for 4 miles and I thought I was the man...then I switched directions and realized that I had about a 20mph tail wind...which was now in my face. Awesome. A kid on a barbie jeep power wheels passed me.

Makes sense...he's still building for Furnace Creek 508.

I don't know what his total mileage is expected to be today. He left from the house at 5:30 and he's planning to climb to Dawson's saddle. Five bottles (three empty...well just Accelerade powder...in his pockets that he'll fill up before the climb) and a bunch of gels stuffed in his shorts.

A quick shower will take care of that. Alternatively, lots of toilet paper and maybe some wet baby wipes. Sorry, couldn't help it.

80 miles on the tandem, Watermelon Ride just NW of Jacksonville, FL. We took a bunch of stops as this was the longest my wife's ever ridden and I wanted her to come home happy. Total time about 4:15, ride time ~3:45ish. The fast crew came in from 100 in 4:02, just ahead of us.

I live in Southern Cali. Today I was thinking of riding to the beach and back, about 30 miles but I thinking I might go the other direction, to the hills where there's no cars and lots of uphill training about 40 miles. i love So Cal.

I was planing on 60 miles today, but only got a third of that because I noticed a strange clicking coming from my back wheel. I was afraid that the thing was going to blow up.

I did 42 miles.

During my cool-down on a short stretch of MUP, I met a guy who was about 40 miles from home and a little lost. I rode with him for about 3 miles, showed him how to get back to where he needed to go and offered to fill his bottles at my house, but he was good to go.

Did 101.7 miles, The NYC Century Bike Tour. This was my 3rd time, what a fantastic ride, weather co-operated fantastically despite Saturday's Hanna downpours. This one felt like the easiest of all three I've done so far. Should have gone for another loop and make it 200 miles. I'll do it the next year... j/k... or maybe not

About 85 mi (the Garmin continues to cut out...) on a truly beautiful day here in NJ. Up to Milford, with a stop at the bakery. Maybe 5k vertical, but nothing steep. When the only "bad" thing about a ride is a poor choice of baked goods at the stop, it's a really good day. But the coffee was great!

31.6 miles
Approx 1200 feet elevation gain
2:58 TT
2:26 saddle time

Met some nice guys at the mid-point at the top of Casitas Pass who were coming from Santa Barbara. Spent a few minutes talking and then we each returned the way we had arrived. The last climb up the mid-point kicked my butt and I had to stop and rest about a mile from the top for 2 minutes before I could continue. I was at the edge of blacking out (strange ghostly black flashes across my vision although my mind seemed clear) so I stopped before I passed out. Temp was mid to high 80's I think and no shade on that side of the pass. 2 bottles of drink mix and 1 bottle of plain water from a refill at the lake entrance water fountain.

My route today was the first half of this (up to the tallest peak). On the map I went CCW from the start to the white dot at "(0-8) SR 150" behind the lake.

George is still out there. He called a bit ago to say he was off of the mountain. Now it's 40 miles of headwinds for him.
