Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone have the problem

of losing too much weight from biking? It seems people are always complaining about being too heavy, but I'm at the other end of the spectrum.

I'm 5'11, was 158lbs before the summer, and I'm at 133 now. I'm a nutritionist, so I know the basics of calories consumed must = calories expended to maintain body weight, but it's proving difficult. I literally get bored of eating so often/much, but at the same time I'm starting to scare friends, as they think I'm sick. haha

I don't know, feel free to vent with me lanky folks!

im 5'10 weighing 130ish. It really sucks thinking throughout the day, "Have i eaten enough calories today to not lose weight?" It also sucks having to eat more than I comfortable can.

I hate you both. j/k

I've heard the same issue from friends that have thru-hiked the AT. It was a big deal to find the most calories for the least amount of money. The winner...Little Debbie!!!

Bikes: 09 Motobecane Grand Sprint and a couple others not worth mentioning.

no, Im told we are all too fat for this sport. At 5'11 and 133 you have only a few pounds to go.

seriously though, you might try eating more.

in the morning from the school cafeteria: a can of arizona tea, blueberry bagel with regular cream cheese, then a granola bar in the next class

lunch: either a footlong turkey with the works from subway, two arby's sandwiches or quiznos

dinner: whatever my mom makes, but always a four-course meal. then some snacking later.

Bikes: Lots

I used to have that problem. I'd drop 20-30 lbs every May/June when my cycling mileage ramped up for the summer ... and I'd end up in the underweight category on the BMI chart.

Sadly, since I went back to University in 2005, I have not had that problem. My cycling mileage has dropped off considerably because of the amount of studying and work (employment) I have to do, and now it's a fight to keep my weight in the normal category on the BMI chart. Thankfully though, I have not soared up into the overweight category!!

Back when I was cycling a lot, like you, I got sick of eating. When you're cycling 10,000+ kms a year, it's tough to eat enough and food gets very, very boring. I used to go through the grocery store looking for the highest calorie options I could find.

Your problem will evaporate when you turn 40.

Thats one thing I love about backpacking the AT... if I can't eat my entire meal, I just feed it to a thru-hiker.

Anyway, I sorta know what you mean. I am constantly hungry... but I just don't want to eat anymore because it feels like I'm eating TOO much then. But in any case, since I actually WANT to lose weight, I'm not too upset about it.

I too have to eat MASSIVE amounts of food to maintain my bodyweight. I'm 6'0" 155 now... I've dropped about 10 pounds this year. I eat, and eat, and eat until I'm sick, and have still managed to shed 10 pounds. Better this than the opposite, I guess.

Oh yeah, I'm 28 years old. A metabolism like mine is understandable in high school, but I'm no pup anymore.

Additionally, I sit in an office all day and eat like s**t. Doughnuts for breakfast. Frozen pasta boxes or leftovers for lunch. And massive servings of whatever the wifey cooks for dinner.

I lost weight when I got back on the road bike, but have been able to hold steady at 155 or so now, my preferred weight. I am 5' 11" and almost 41 years old. I find lots of superfluous calories from liquor and ice cream keep me from getting too thin.

I haven't lost a pound since I started cycling and stopped drinking as much beer. Odd.

That's not that much food. That's why you are skinny. Your breakfast is especially light.

Bikes: two wheeled ones

If you're having trouble eating enough, I have one word for you: Smoothies.

It's nice because you don't realize you're eating, it's kinda like drinking a soda. You just sit there and sip, and after a little while you've taken in 600 calories.
