Sometimes, life is it's own reward.
Lets wait for the thread where the noob comes here lamenting about overpaying for a 2006 campy record derailuer on Ebay.
Speaking of overpaying, I have a 70's vintage Shimano Crane rear mech just waiting for some retro grouch to pay me hundreds of dollars for...

Happens to me all the time. Very annoying. Someone outbid me for a pair of Sidi's to the tune of $450. Way to waste at least $200, smart guy.

I once paid 10 dollars for a ball of lint on ebay because I sure as hell wasn't going to let someone else get my ball of lint.
It wasn't really a ball of lint but in retrospect, it might as well have been and the lesson was learned-for now.
Their "shop victoriously" campaign captures the phenomenon quite well.

If I had the time, I would make a living buying stuff retail online and selling it on Ebay.
It's like a cultural phenomenon the way people overpay on Ebay.

It's really really hard to get deals on ebay, but when you do it's totally worth it!
Also you're almost guaranteed to get top dollar for whatever quality item you sell. I once sold a turbocharger (a specific one-model only IHI turbo) for over 2x what I was being offered on an enthusiast forum.

For the life of me, I don't understand why anyone would place a bid before the absolute last minute. Seems to me all that does is encourage fools to run up the price. Pretend you're not interested, then wait until the last minute and bid the max you're willing to pay. Painless, and it usually works.
And the best way to get a deal is to find an item you want that's mislabeled so that it doesn't show up in the normal searches done by the usual suspects. How many ways can you mis-spell "Shimano?"

I always make sure to message the winner in cases like that...maybe suggest he buy John Scherer's VideoProfessor CD's about Ebay.

The problem for me has usually been my max being a dollar more than the bid that won the auction.

Has coddling tendencies.
Not bike related, but here's one of the more absurd items auctioned on Ebay. The person behind it is L.A. based comedian/writer, Joe Wilson, who I happen to know through work. The bidding offers kept going up and up, then Ebay took it down, claiming it to be a fraud. To this day, Joe still doesn't know at what point in the bidding the prices were invalid. He did end up selling it to a collector in Denver for $300.
Here's one of many articles written about it at the time.

I'm not showing my hand until the last possible moment. You'll never pay more than a buck more than the next highest bid, in any event. If you bid early, you can almost guarantee that somebody will beat it.
