Why do you ride?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I just thought it was interesting that two people on this forum have had exactly, word for word, the same experiences.

I have to borrow P-Cads reason. Having cycling taken away by less than stellar health, and so many doctors over the years tell me it's not a good idea, was miserable.

I ride because for years I couldn't.

I ride because the clock is ticking and I know one day I might not be able to.

I ride today because I want to ride tomorrow.

I ride for my sanity...my family drives me crazy and cycling helps me relax. Gotta love those endorphins.

I ride for my brother...diagnosed with MS 3 years ago. I train for and ride the local MS 150 every year.

I ride because I love food...and I have little to no self control. If I didn't ride, I'd weigh 300 pounds in no time.

To get a tan.

My monitor tan is starting to wear off.

Mostly because it's one thing I'm good at that doesn't include sitting on my ass. Running makes more than my muscles sore, and biking is just so much fun. It's the one thing I can actually exercise and get away. Might I mention, it's the first time I've ever gotten hungry while exercising. I mean I can go on a 20 minute run pushing myself just as hard, but I don't eat any where between that time. I can go biking for 4 hours and the chocolate chip chewy bar has never tasted so good. It's something I've always done, but when I was little I thought road bikes were weird.

I didn't know why the handle bars were shaped like that, I didn't care, and I never got the skinny tires either. Up until I was about 10, I didn't understand why people owned such goofy looking bikes.

as many others have said, because it's fun...the fact that it is exercise and healthy is ancillary....important, but ancillary.

Mostly I ride cause its fun. I also like to work on bikes (very relaxing). I ride mountain bikes because some fool told me I'm too old to ride a MTB. I ride road because I like riding with the pack. I ride MUPs because its great excersise. But mostly I ride because its a blast, pure fun.

I ride to ride, to get away, to ride, to be outside, to ride, to lose (or at least not gain) weight, to ride, to meet people, to ride, to escape, and most of all, to ride.
