How I explain all this to my 14 year old daughter
I realize of course that my daughter thinks that I am the Ultimate Dork, particularly when I'm wearing my bike racer garb. She compared me to the nerdy boys in her school who (gasp) have anime images as their My Space or Face Book backgrounds.
What she doesn't realize is that people like me and these teen dorks don't care. In fact, while we may realize the world views us as nerds, we secretly think that is because the world doesn't GET us, because we are on some Ultimate Cool Level that eludes them. Which may be completely delusional, but like the Placebo Effect, it's profoundly effective. We don't care. We're very happy. We think the rest of the world are all idiots. All of which is amplified in my case by a large dose of Endorphins that I recharge on a daily basis.
I also pointed out to her that the Biggest Nerd EVER (B. Gates) became the World's Richest Man. I think that did get her attention.
Endorphin Fueled Self Delusion RULES.

But it's something that she probably won't get until she grows up. My sister, who's turning 20 this November, still doesn't quite understand me, and I'm the total outlier in my family!

perhaps if you didnt spend so much time reading and posting on this trivial, meaningless 21st century exercise in socializing known as BF, she wouldn't think you are the "ultimate dork"?
I think your self loathing you so often refer to is displaced feelings you have about hammering your life away at your keyboard looking at BF.

Point well taken. I think that when your net worth is over a few billion, it barely matters if you're the richest man or not. You're still living HUGE (and can probably afford that Cervélo you've always wanted!)

I'm getting that Cervelo I always wanted and I haven't even made my first million (which in the NY Area qualifies you for Public Assistance). But I have extremely skewed priorities.

Abandon all hope of convincing your teenage dughter that you are not a geek.
You could be David Beckham, Lance Armstrong, Tom Brady, Tony Stewart, Michael Schumaker, Kobi Bryant rolled all into one, and you would still be a geek to your teenage daughter.

What in my original post ever gave you the impression that I was trying to do such a thing? I simply pointed out that the geeks of the world have it made. They revel in geeky oblivion. Blissful oblivion. I don't know if she understood any of that. Why the F would I care? I'm high on Endorphins.

Mine will be 18 in a few weeks.
She's spent more than half her life in Under Armour, cleats and/or running shoes. I've seen her turn herself inside out with conditioning. She gets the bike thing.
As for as everything else, I'm an idiot and it's a miracle I've managed to live this long.

Wait. We're geeks?
I had no flippin' idea. Lycra not cool? Bombing downhill at near 50 mph not cool? Mushroom helmet, not cool?
Clearly you are wrong.

I just don't care what people think about me in my personal life.
It gives me more time to worry about other things... like how people feel about my business
