Bicycle freindly Cities
HI,
I am sure this had been discussed, as I approach my retirement age is their a list of Bicycle Freindly cities where bikes are the norm, not a nuisance.
I would love to live some where bikes are shown the same respect as cars.

I live in Eugene, OR and it is great for cyclists. I ride a bike everyday, don't want a car because I don't need one here. There are tons of MUP's if you like that, bike lanes all over town and within 45 minutes you can be on a country road with little traffic for hours, and lots of hills outside of town, as well as a monster at the south end of town. It's a very liberal community with outdoor markets and just lots of cool little festivals. Check it out.

I've been to, and cycled in, Davis and Boulder. I preferred Davis. Davis was a very quiet little town that blatantly caters to cyclists. Boulder was all right, but I don't know if it was because I was there during the first week of University or what, but it was packed with people (mainly in cars) and generally very, very busy.

You should also check the weather averages. Many of these "bike friendly" cities are only friendly during certain months of the year. Personally, I do not think months of snow on the ground or 100F days are very friendly to bicycle commuters.

to quote DoK "madre de dios". The Bay Area is AWESOME. You can ride 11-12 months out of the year in total comfort. It's beautiful, and there are tons of bikes, so drivers are used to them

+1 on the bay area. I've ridden everything in the east bay, I can get to Marin with a 20 minute drive, south bay in 45 minutes, and north bay in 40. Each with their own climate.

Believe it or not, I really l like riding in Boston because it is such an interesting city and metropolitan area and has a pretty youthful, fitness oriented population. I ride early in a reverse commute, so for the most part I avoid the brunt of its legendary nasty drivers. There's not much you can do about the weather, but the Sunbelt seems to be excessively car-friendly.
The Boston Globe architectural critic once wrote a column on Boston as the "city of outdoor rooms," i.e. one could stroll the city looking at all the interesting sights, and passing from room to room (neighborhood to neighborhood), as if visiting someone's home. He contrasted this with the "cities of towers and cars," using Southfield, MI as an example. I think that title says it all to bicyclists.
