Comparing DA Wheels: 7850 sl vs. 7850 c24

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Comparing DA Wheels: 7850 sl vs. 7850 c24

Does anyone have any experience with either or both of these wheelsets. I considered getting some wheels built, but the three year warranty on DA wheelsets is hard to pass up. I want a good set of training wheels that are stiff and good for climbing.

Both of these wheelsets would do and I have not yet ridden either yet. But I plan to soon, and I want to know what differences in ride quality to expect.

I like the tubeless clincher idea with the 7850 sl's, but it is something that I could do without. It is really about ride quality at this point.

How do they compare?

Thanks,
Chad

On the sl variety (this is going to sound thick!) can you use clincher tyes as tubeless??!!

I ordered and paid for some of the c24 cl wheels three months ago and the uk distributor still can't tell me when I'll get them. Pretty shoddy for a major bike part manuf

The C24 cl wheels are, IIRC about 200g lighter. They are supposed to be very smooth riding as well...

Part of the equation will satisfy you

I have owned the C24s for about 2 months now -- just putting about 1k km on them, replacing a pair of newer Ksyriums Elites. These are very smooth wheels, roll up like a dream, cut through cross winds far better than the blades of my Ksyriums, have been handling fairly poor road conditions (chip seal, gravel, etc.) with ease and smoothness, and have been everything I could have hoped for (except that they were not inexpensive). They have stayed true, and do weigh in slightly below the 1400 gr weight thy advertise. I can't speak for the 7850SLs as I don't have them, but the C24's do offer the best of both worlds in terms of the lightness and sweet ride of carbon without the braking inefficiencies that come from a pure carbon rim. If these meet your performance needs, you will be very pleased - assuming you can actually get a pair from your dealer. They still seem to be pretty rare here in southern Canada. You probably cant go wrong with either wheel I would venture to guess...

No. The sl variety can use Hutchinson's tubeless clincher tire and can be run with a traditional tube and clincher tire.

A local shop has them on special for $800. I may just go with them, just because they are so cheap.

BTW, where is Bannanatugger? He always has opinions on wheels.

The only differences between these wheels is rim weight and price. Aerodynamically they are very similar.

If you have the cash for the C24's, I'd get them.

What difference do the rims make? Does the solid rim on the rl's make for a smoother ride?

Is there anyone here who has actually ridden the sl's? Or, even better, both sets?

The rims on the C24's would actually be a little smoother than the SL's.

"Little" as in freaking unnoticeable unless you are a testing machine.

Every wheel, frame and material thread posted on the Road Forums would end up on the second page after Pcad finishes adding to what he considers his blog.

I think that I am going w/ the sl's. The price is just too good, the tubeless option is very enticing (I've heard that those Hutchins tires last a long time). And I would feel like a wienie using carbon wheels as training wheels. Thanks for your help. I'll probably post a review of the wheelset after I've ridden them for a while.
