Why Motorists Hate Cyclists - Huh?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Indeed.

Would you do the same if you were in your car and the guy behind you wanted to turn right on red? How about if you were on a motorcycle? Or is it only bicycles that are expected to get out of cars' ways? I always ask, "what would a car do?" and if the answer is that I sit there blocking the guy behind me, too bad for him.

Funny, on the C/A forum someone was wondering why some folks 'hate' motorcyclists...

I decided to do a nooner and reply and it kind fits here.... or not.

For example, I've been riding motorcycles since I could ride a bicycle but I have a hard time with anyone who stunts, street races, rides a twin with open exhaust, or who otherwise rides in a way that I find in appropriate for the street. When I'm riding my motorcycle -- an 1100cc stock sportbike that I use as my daily commuter and that I ride in full gear -- I simply shake my head when one of my 'bretheren' does something I find disagreeable, e.g., a wheelie on the street, speeding, going WOT, or parking on the sidewalk or a hashed area. Put me on my bicycle around one of these jokers who has decided to have some perverse type of 'fun' at my expense and it's a short trip to wishing some type of wrath upon him.

Now, to be fair, there are a lot cyclists who ride in ways that I find inappropriate too... but I ain't going there.
So, as for motorists, pick a reason... any reason as there are a lot.

- they've been inconvenience by a pack of riders on a regular basis (roads are for cars, not bikes... cyclists not helping their own cause here)
- they're intimidated as motorists by having to deal with a cyclist on the road (reminds them of their own lack of skills)
- they only wish they had that kind of free time to do something as frivolous as ride a bike (envy)
- you're in their way (intolerant, bikes don't belong on the road)
- they never had a bike as a kid or were confined to ride it in playgrounds and BMX tracks (bikes as toys & perhaps envy)
- they don't like being reminded that they made bad choices and are impossibly out of shape (envy)
- they're simply idiots who hate everyone who isn't just like them (Intolerant/hateful)
- they're ride bikes and honestly believe bicycles don't belong on the road because riding on the road simply scares the bejeezus out of them and, instead, love bike routes, MUPs, and the like. (bikes don't belong on the road)
- and on, and on, and on....

So your bike lane sticks you in a location where you are to the right of right-turning traffic at stoplights? Sounds like a risky place to be in!

A&S would be a great forum for discussing this kind of stuff.

If it was possible to do in a car, I would. Since a car is wider, however, it's not always possible. But I agree it should not be expected, just that it's polite. Then again, I rarely ride up to the front of the line for a red light. I'm slower and all the cars I'm squeezing by will pass me again soon. I have few prolems with motorists because I treat them with respect, make small gestures of kindness, and follow the laws just as they do.

Sometimes when driving a car, because of our car's size compared to lane width, we can't help but block the car behind us. But whenever possible, I always stop as close to the center line as possible so people who want to turn right can fit in there and do so. It's basic common courtesy! And because they are so much smaller it's so much easier to do when we're on bikes or motorcycles that I can't imagine being so selfish as to expect people to wait just because I don't feel like moving.

I feel the key to safety and smooth moving road transportation (regardless of vehicle) is to stay out of each other's way. This requires us to anticipate what others are wanting to do, and do our best to accommodate that.

It was just a four-way intersection: no right turn lane, just a bike lane on the shoulder. There is a small shopping mall to the right; turning right just takes you into the mall.

Wrong. I constantly have intersections with traffic lights that are one lane each direction. And if the OP was in the bike lane, then he shouldn't have moved over to let the SUV in. Notice he didn't mention if there was a right turn lane or not. And if there wasn't (i.e. all lanes going straight, maybe a straight/right) he was in the right and the SUV should have waited to make the turn when it's safe.

You FTL.
