Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You can't assume that the carbon underneath the paint is the beautiful black weave you see on "naked" carbon frames - cause chances are it isn't. See, that weave is pretty much a cosmetic top layer and if paint is going on the frame, there isn't much need for the builder to throw it on there. If you were to peek under the paint, what you'd likely see would resemble black plastic tubing.

There are exceptions of course - usually with frames that have some naked area exposed.

Even if there was weave under the paint, getting the paint completely off without scratching it would be darn near impossible. Carbon frames need to be hand sanded...no stripper should be used.

Yes, you never know what you're gunna see under there.

I once sanded a painted Columbus Link fork, and the carbon looked a bit uglier than I expected, although it looked ok once I smoothed it right down a sprayed the clear on it.

I've seen sanded carbon frames with ugly joins with bits of glue showing.

Uber bad idea. The F4C and F5C are painted for a reason... no cosmetic carbon layers as others have already mentioned. There is no way to sand off the paint and primer without taking some carbon...

Also UV rays will damage the resin holding the carbon fabric together.

. . . . and we all know what happens then -- spontaneous combustion often evoking a thermo-nuclear reaction . . . Boom!

Not pretty and makes a mess.

I'll spare you's the infamous fireball today.

It's certainly possible if you're experienced in doing that type of sanding and have the right clear coat to refinish. If you sand into the resin below the paint you're probably fine, but if you go farther into the fibers at all, all bets are off. If you really wanted to do it, I'd call Calfee and have them do it. From their website it appears they offer such a service. I agree with the others though, it's likely it won't look quite as pretty as you might think.
